. Why does the rest of the world keep complaining about the size of American cars? I often criticize aspects of America and the things we can improve, but this feels similar to British complaints about the way Americans pronounce words. They have their own altered words, like "aluminium," which Americans pronounce correctly. And they came up with fucking word and still say it wrong. Or the French, who criticize how we say "croissant"have you heard how they say "hot dog" and "hamburger"? It's a bit ironic to hear pronunciation critiques from those who often drop the "H" sound. I would be dammed if I let someone who can't say Haa tell me how to say words correctly.

Back to the cars: We have more space here, so we don't need compact cars to fit on narrow roads. Yes, vehicles like the F-350 are large, but that's the exception. Please, stop complaining about our regular trucks. And this is coming from someone who would drive a kei truck.

It is the most popular vehicle sold in america that people are buying for very ordinary commuting, so it's an applicable comparison

God where to start
  • extremely dangerous to basically everyone not in the drivers seat
  • disastrous for the environment and fuel economy
  • mostly popular as a loophole so that automotive manufacturers can classify them as a "truck" and therefore don't have to comply with safety and emission standards
  • completely unnecessary size wise in 95% of scenarios
  • In many cases, actually offer LESS room than an alternative. Turns out my estate with the back seats down has more litres of cargo space than pretty much any pickup truck
  • This is not the exception. This is a F150 and there are millions of them
Yeah, i'll die on this hill. These trucks are stupid and they're killing us

Except our vehicles are getting so big that many parking spots can't even accommodate them. There's such a demand for trucks and SUVs we'll rarely need the room of, that US makes like Ford and Chevy are basically phasing out cars entirely.

It's a very real, very American phenomenon

Is 35 considered good in America? Like if my car ever said 35mpg I would be taking it to the dealership to get it checked because something would be seriously wrong. 55mpg is what I'd expect on a regular commute and my car is really not particularly fuel efficient at all.

(I'm slightly shitposting at this point, it's cool that you like your car and nothing personal. If I lived in the USA I'd probably be buying a truck too. but I'm serious about the truck criticisms.)

So I work from home and I don't actually drive that much but $50 to $100. Usually I can get a whole trip out of a tank of gas with a 26 gallon tank. It gets closer to 20 MPG on the highway so that's nice at least. I probably average 200-300 miles a month not including road trips. I've had the truck exactly 3 years now and I've only put 9k miles on it.

They don't. When I had to replace my Pontiac G6, I had trouble finding good cars (since many models aren't even made anymore), so I had to settle for an equinox (crossover). It wasn't what I wanted, but it was just what's available.

Sadly, we're at that point now with no sign of slowing down. These vehicles are getting bigger each year.

What uses do SUVs have that aren't better filled by different vehicles? They're crap for normal driving, their fuel economy is dreadful, they don't fit in normal parking spaces, they're obscenely dangerous and they have very little hauling capacity for their size and footprint.

Youd have thought so but the UK is completely stupid when it comes to consistently measuring things. A lot of people will give you their weight in stone, their height in feet and inches and their tape measure measurements (for DIY) in centimetres.

Why are people getting so held up on this point, are y'all being obtuse on purpose.

If it bothers you so much, let me concede the point - A truck is not a car - and offer a better argument: why is the vehicle of choice for most americans trucks and not cars, why are these trucks getting absurdly bigger every year, why are manufacturers allowed to skirt safety and emission standards based on a pedantic legal loophole when people are clearly using these trucks for non commercial purposes

A day without learning is a day without living gobbless. For those who don't know, a lot of the US that isn't on/near a coast is a rurarl wasteland. Not all of it but definitely a large portion of it, so here's a random chart from a couple years ago to break it down a little more. If used car brands is surprising, think about the current car market, brand resell value, and average American income

American car culture is literally the worst thing in the universe. If it weren't bad enough to kill who knows how many people in collisions and several times more in oil wars, there's not even any opt out whatsoever because homes and destinations are miles and miles apart. I live the closest to work that I ever have, and it still takes about two hours one way on foot.
