I liked both. I liked how Sanctuary gave a sense of new adventure/danger.

Also agree with this. Actually, I think I actually preferred Sanctuary slightly but they're both great.

Its fairly iconic due to what it is attached to, and it being a thing at the time when anime stuff was getting its initial surge of popularity along with how fresh and interesting Kingdom Hearts was.

I imagine most kingdom hearts fans though, if told "remember a song from KH1," will actually remember either a boss battle theme or the Awakening theme/the last world's normal+combat themes.

Or Colleseum maybe, because its somewhat catchy and you hear it about a bazillion times.

I am pretty sure kingdom heart's commercials with simple and clean playing is one of the parts, alongside "oh snap a game made by these final fantasy guys where I visit some of my favorite disney worlds" and "what kind of wacky game is this that has final fantasy characters meeting up with disney characters and aladdin is fighting at my side this is very interesting", that got people checking out the game. Very nostalgic for some gamers. Hell I was 18 years old in 2001 and its pretty nostalgic for me.

At the same time, it was a big ask. Final Fantasy and Disney is a crossover nobody would have expected, but instead of easing into the idea, they doubled down by also making your weapon a giant key and going HARD on the metaphysics angle. But then it also took itself as seriously as a typical JRPG in spite of its absurdity.

It works, but you have to go all in on it. I've known several gamers who tried to play it and ended up dropping it like halfway through because they just couldn't get used to the tone.

Sanctuary is the best. I loved simple and clean and would listen to it all the time (the slower version though, not the techno version in the opening) but when Sanctuary came out... good god I was blown away. Both the opening and the actual song really emphasized just how much of an improvement KH 2 was in almost every category.
