https://www.gamespot.com/articles/uvalde-families-file-lawsuit-against-activision-and-meta/1100-6523731/

the lawsuits were filed by attorney Josh Koskoff, who contends that Activision and Meta share responsibility for "grooming... socially vulnerable" young men with violent video game fantasies. The complaint also states that both companies "knowingly exposed the Shooter to the weapon, conditioned him to see it as the solution to his problems, and trained him to use it."

As spelled out in the lawsuit, the families allege that Ramos downloaded a copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare that features the same DDM4V7 model rifle that he later purchased and used for the school shooting. Additionally, it accuses Meta of sending Ramos targeted ads for the same gun on Instagram from the manufacturer, Daniel Defense.

The article says Meta doesn't allow advertisements for guns, but the gun company's page posted promotional material. So it's not like you'll be scrolling along and stumble on "Buy our deadly weapon!" ads, but if you're looking at gun pages, you can see posts that are basically ads.

Yeah, these idiots have it backwards. Videogames didn't attract these shooters to violence. These shooters were already obsessed with violence, which is why they were attracted to firearms/weapons and violent media.
An all-consuming obsession with human-on-human violence is the one thing that mass rampage shooters have in common. (They often idolize other mass killers as well, but not always)

Age recommendations are irrelevant since it's rare anybody refuses to sale to minors and if they do it's easy to find somebody to buy the game for you since it isn't a crime.

It's a point of fact that the gun lobby has sold a culture of guns that almost amount to a psy-op through subtle signaling and overt dog whistling. And it's 100% worked to increase the sales and circulation of firearms and firearms accessories, as well as increasing mass shooting and other types of gun violence incidents.

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/firearms-industry-scrutinized-for-how-it-markets-to-consumers

Video games don't cause violence. But a video game that was the equivalent of a Sears Christmas catalog wish list to the point where they were sued into no longer using real names for the very real weapons in the game because of that connection... is very telling.

And the manufacturers always knew this.

https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/video-game-maker-drops-gun-makers-not-their-guns-flna1c9840069

You can see how games like MW share more responsibility in this debate than the debunked "games cause violence" canard. They've been a willing and complicit advertising partner in a culture that sells guns as sexy and cool in ways similar to Joe Camel selling cigarettes.

The lawsuit has merits, if it's levied in the right way.

Then that would also be irrelevant.

I could see an argument that showing promoted posts from a company counts as "advertising"

In that case the difference would be did the shooter see these gun company's posts because they intentionally went to that company's page, or did the algorithm put it in their feed?

For comparison, here in Australia it is against the law to sell games like that to underage persons. A parent has to buy it for them.

As a multiple firearm owner who is subscribed to about a dozen different websites for firearm and/or parts purchases, Ive never seen one either outside of my email or actual mail. A couple bigger companies sent me a catalogue (mostly of parts) and I get those spam emails I unsubscribe from about deals going on. But Ive never seen an ad banner on any website for firearms.

Sounds like a chicken or the egg argument though. If theres no way to definitively say whether they were attracted to the violent video games or they just happen to play violet video games, then what good does the information do? You can ask any psychiatric professional and they will tell you there are millions of Americans who think violent thoughts and never act on any of them for their entire life.

it's usually proven ever 3 years(since i was like 6) that games have no correlation at all to real world violence and the only effect videogames have on people is improving cognition and hand-eye coordination as well as memory.

And most likely the slime attorney who filed this suit probably took it on contingency. Which means they get a gross percentage of the settlement or judgement while the rest gets divvyed up amongst the multiple participants after taxes.

Typical contingency percentages can yield up to 40% of whatever the award is.
