I'm the closing manager tonight at work. Got a text saying a closer called off.
I check the rundown for the day and that takes us from 3 people for the last two hours of being open and the closing stuff, to just two of us.

First off - no. I don't want to work. I happily accept that. But given I don't have that luxury, what I'd consider a fair consolation would to not be staffed at the barest minimum. 3 closers is already extremely stressful, entirely needlessly, 2 is just ridiculous

Oh, and I work for a company valued at around $90 Billion. I don't think paying an an extra ~$110 for another body would have hurt their bottom line too much.

Sounds like a managerial staffing issue not a "person who doesn't want to work" issue.

People get sick. People call out. If the business is all but screwed when even one person calls out, that's poor staffing and/or leadership

Someone post the picture of people saying "nobody wants to work" with newspaper quotes going back to the like 1920s.

But on a serious note, does your company pay these people like shit or did the person call out for at least a legitimate emergency (even if they lied about it, at least presented it as legitimate)?

Work is infuriating at times. My job actually pays well but getting anyone who is working with me to do a damn thing is like pulling teeth. We allot people the last hour of work to, in a way to make it easier to understand, 'Go behind the counter and finish up stuff in the back, but come out if things get too busy' .... Well, this is a remote job and those people never come out. They see the last hour of the day, move to the 'back', and it could be the busiest day in ever, and they will never come out to help.

I blew a gasket last night over this. And when I reminded them they need to come out when we are busy, one had the fucking nerve to give me a thumbs up and not help. Fuck him.

Yeah this is a problem with management. At my former job we started out with 1 person per shift which made it a nightmare if someone called out. Then someone quit and management decided to stick with only 2 people for 3 shifts.

Upper management gets rewarded with bonuses if they're cheap enough.

Yes but a bosses is supposed to plan for this.
So it is not the reason why. The reason is they don't want to hire for contingency.

And if that stresses you out they don't care. They won't care till you quit too.

The fact that you can run it with the amount of personnel you have says that no, the boss doesn't need to hire more.

Perhaps it takes you twice as long to close, or perhaps without the proper amount of people things slip through the cracks.

Ive been in retail, not as a manager, but when you are constantly running around because a quadrillion dollar megacorp chooses to staff you the bare minimum all day. It wasn't always like that, but at some point in my 7 years working for megacorp it became that way. Skeleton crews all around. That's a corporate decision. Do you think the store manager actually wants people to wait in line all day?

I am now the General Manager of a liquor store which I like a LOT better, but it's a gov't job(control state) and I am in a union. THAT'S what it takes, I guess, for retail to not suck completely. But I am happy.

I have no advice, but hopefully some day you do find a job that makes you happy.

If I have to call off last minute, like it sounds like OP had pulled on him, I wouldn't have the ability to call someone to cover, because it's likely an emergency of some kind.

If I have more than 24 hours ahead that I know I won't be on shift, I do my best to make arrangements to cover.

(But, in the end, if I notify my manager with enough time beforehand, it's really his job to staff his department. For example, if I explain in July that I'm taking two weeks in September, that's a manager problem, not mine. That's not what happened here, so I guess it's kind of immaterial.)

Quitting is a privilege. Especially in the economy we live in.

Until the necessities for life are decoupled from the value our labor produces, quitting is the ultimate privilege. It means you have the capital to not work, even for a short time, and not be left exposed to the elements to struggle and die. That's the definition of privilege these days.
