if youre on pc theres a mod that allows you to lengthen the time window for parrying

also on a lot of enemies mashing parry works

additionally, stealth killing an enemy, running from all the others, resetting their AI, then stealth killing another, etc - works great

firecrackers will buy you free hits against everything in the game as long as you dont spam them too close to the last cast

I did a lot of this before I understood how to properly use the parry/stagger system. You can actually get through a large amount of encounters this way

For a large amount of bosses, you can just use chip damage to fight them as well. I was never able to get the parry timing down on quite a few bosses. I just treated it more like a souls game and ran around until there was an attack that I knew I could get a hit or two in after. It's slower, but easier imo.

Man, people made is sound like parrying and deflecting was some kinda instant-frame blocking you see in fighting games. It's not even close. Deflecting is as easy as seeing when they attack. Deflecting in the Souls games are harder.

The secret to Sekiro is the counterslash aspect of deflecting and understanding how Posture works in general (more important for bosses)

The real secret is to play the game like a ninja: Don't play fair. Use hit and run tactics, throw whatever bullshit works on them, utilise stealth, simply exit combat when it's unfavourable etc.

Yes however the biggest thing is being able to create openings vs enemies who are otherwise immune

Sekiro is really intricate and there's a lot to say about it vs Souls. You could write a small book on it tbh

So these simple answers always confuse me. "Is that how it works?" Kek

One reason I like Stellar Blade is because you can spam the block button and get those perfect parries easy.

Not so with Sekiro

Really shows you how From thinks their games should be played. Up close, aggressive offense with pinpoint parrying.

I struggled with BB until I realized you gotta get in there, playing defensively gets you murdered.

When I played it, I backed up my save before Genichiro in the intro level, and just fought him over and over until I beat him. You get an altered cutscene where he cheats, but the outcome is the same. Only, the git gud part was over, so when U had to fight Genichiro later, I massacred him.

Like most FromSoft games, I think the hardest part is getting the controls down.

I found that part very difficult. Not just because I was "unlearning" years of playing Dark Souls games, but because I found it difficult to weave prosthetic tool stuff into the rhythm of katana usage/deflecting.

But once that finally "clicks", obstacles are much less daunting than they were before. Just don't (light spoilers with one non-spoiler boss name) don't make the mistake of getting hung up on side bosses like Lady Butterfly early in the game. You might benefit from grinding out a little bit, upgrading your stuff, and coming back later on. Because while you absolutely can take on side bosses early on, you don't necessarily have to.

Most of the bosses can't be fought like Dark Souls where you hit them twice and run around waiting for an opening. They also mix bosses that are easier to posture break than whittle down their health without telling you.

Guardian Ape is different because you likely spend more time blocking or parrying him just to whittle down his HP for his first form. You can't try to break his posture because he moves around too much. Unless you're using Yashariku's Sugar and hitting him with the Mortal Blade.

There's also the fact that many people miss or don't understand that Ichimonji restores your posture gauge, using it for bosses that do heavy damage to your posture makes it so you spend less time holding block when your posture gauge is full if you can find an opening to dodge and use it.

The biggest tip that helped me was what no-hit runners do: hold block the entire time and quickly tap it whenever you need to parry. If you miss the parry timing, you're still blocking so it won't destroy your health. Blocking also reduces your fatigue bar substantially faster so it's win/win to just hold it the whole time you're fighting someone.

That, and learning that EVERY attack can be deflected as long as it doesn't have a red kanji beforehand. There's no need to ever dodge unless you see that symbol first.

It's kind of counterintuitive right?

But if you are holding block "as often as possible" to recover your posture, you can quickly start playing like that. The way you put it is probably the best approach though, holding block all the time as a technique used by no-hit runners.

Also counterslashing, mixing in offense, and footwork/zoning

For almost every enemy attack, there is a position and direction you can be in and dodge from that will avoid the attack entirely and leave you free to either attack or even heal if the opening is great enough. Practice makes perfect, trial and error

Well, maybe for first timers. Dodging helps with specific bosses (mostly the swordsmen type) because then you can do actual damage, the further their health bar is depleted the slower their posture regens. Some bosses are impossible to damage their posture gauge because it recovers almost as soon as you stop hitting them.

use the flame vent prosthetic. u can find it early on in hirata estate

u can get to hirata estate by grabbing the memory bell from the old woman in ashina outskirts, near where all the riflemen are, across the plateau with the memorial mob. take the bell to the sculptor's hut and commune to the left of him
