It's good enough. The Sonic/Shadow levels are mostly pretty great, and as usual the soundtrack fucking hits 90% of the time.

I really did not care for the mech shoot-em-up or the latter half of the treasure hunting stages, though.

Basically I love half of the game (being Sonic/Shadow and the early Knuckles/Rouge levels), but I tolerate the other half. The story really, really hooked me. I loved Shadow, and the Biolizard, and the whole idea that Gerald's revenge speech was being given seconds before his execution felt so chilling.

Soundtrack is the best thing about it.

The Sonic and Shadow levels are overall good.

The rest vary from mediocre to pure shit.

The Chao Garden is also wildly overhyped and functionally void of gameplay.

It's good but Sonic Adventure 1 is better overall. 2 has the better speed levels but everything else is bad. 1 has more overall fun levels and only Gamma and Big are the bad parts

I kinda hated Knuckles/Rouge mode and wasn't crazy about Tails/Eggman mode, but the Sonic/Shadow levels were good enough to make up for it.

Still, even though I enjoyed Adventure 2, Adventure 1 was the better game.

After playing it again recently, it's pretty rough. Only the Sonic/Shadow levels are enjoyable and they're also the shortest in the game.

It's held up almost entirely by its soundtrack and atmosphere

I don't get teh hate for the Knuckles/Rouge levels but I suppose I can get it if you don't have the patience for them. They can feel tedious but I enjoy the atmosphere in those levels.

Because they literally downgraded it from 1. You used to see all the crystals at once on the radar, but in 2 now they only did one a time. So you could literally be next to a crystal and not even know it

The level design got too cute. The one with Rouge in the prison with the time limit was just a bad level.

Amazing soundtrack
Amazing Sonic/Shadow levels

And as a kid, that was one of the best stories for a video game at the time. The ci kept of branching storyline was new to me, so it was cool to see the same being told from the different characters' perspectives.

It was also decently dark for a game about talking animals, which was neat. Shadow's story really hooked me. I also liked the little details in the story, like Eggman's rivalry with tails and Sonic and Knuckles always bickering. It added to the atmosphere.

Fantastic game. And I am the extreme minority of people who enjoy the hunting stages the most. I liked the exploration. Story has plot holes all over the place but if you turn your brain off it's a very fun time. Also the Chao garden is awesome.

i understand why people like it but i just find it super uninteresting. mech stages are really boring and hunting is mostly mindless and really easy (idk how people even struggle when all you do is just lap the stage 3 times). the sonic stages are a mixed bag, with shadow weirdly getting all the really boring stages and pyramid cave is also really boring

hunting is so incredibly easy that i just don't understand how people take five minutes to clear a stage. the only stages that can feel too big are death chamber and mad space, and even then mad space only feels that way because of how boring the bottom section is with all the floating platforms. hunting stages shouldn't really take more than two minutes tbh

The one with Rouge in the prison with the time limit was just a bad level.

i never understood the criticisms of this stage. if anything, it's super small and super straight-forward with nothing interesting to do. the game flatout tells you how to open the safes and also how to open them. when i first played the stage i cleared it in like 50s

It always baffled me how after the Adventure games they never seemed to be able to replicate that kind of movement ever again. I think the closest they got was Frontiers and you have to customize the controls in the menu for that. And it doesn't even apply to the stages, just the open world.

Great game. Some of the Sonic and Shadow levels have still yet to be topped. The Tails and Eggman levels were good as well. And while I wasn't the biggest fan of the Knuckles and Rouge levels, they were decent enough that I still had some fun with them.

The speed stages were peak, but while Eggman had some good levels (Weapons Bed, Cosmic Wall), the mech stages tended to be slow and repetitive. Hunting had exactly 1 good level in Pumpkin Hill and the rest were tolerable to awful.

Last good 3D Sonic game aside from Unleashed's Day stages and modern Sonic stages in Generations. Oh and Colors too but Colors doesn't exactly have the same stage design as the Adventure games, let alone 2.

This is literally all I want from a modern sonic game. Heroes and shadow felt very slippery. I love hate generations because they do bastardize the 3d stages with shitty 2d segments. Why am I doing a weird side scrolling transition stage in city escape when I'm doing a full 2d classic sonic stage right after.

Why isn't that aspect complained about more I do not understand it at all. Were people so starved for 2d sonic at the time they thought the abrupt change of flow was good?
