But what we got - where the trilogy couldn't decide one way or another - was definitely the worst of both worlds. TFA very clearly was trying to build up hype and mystery around Rey's background. Tons of speculation and theories. Is she the brother of Kylo, like Jaina and Jacen? Is she related to Obi-Wan, since she also inexplicably has a British accent when other characters like Boyega's Finn were specifically not speaking with a British accent (evidently it's just totally random whether you speak American or British). I think there were already Palpatine theories around during TFA too, but with little evidence to go on it's as random as any other theory. Then TLJ says "nope! all of your little nerd theories were wrong. her family is no one. surprised u". Which is ok.... Most people think midichlorians in your blood and Shmi Skywalker having a literal virgin birth with the Force with Anakin is stupid anyway. So it's not a bad message that Rey's blood doesn't matter. I think some people reacted a little badly though because TLJ also did a dozen other "surprise! you expected an interesting answer to this question from TFA? the answer is nothing! bet you feel real silly now expecting something interesting" . So instead of that twist being really interesting it's just one thing on the pile of nothing twists. Then RoS walks it back and soft-retcons TLJ. And we don't need to get into that. Because obviously every single thing about Palpatine's involvement was unplanned. And it basically brings us back into midichorian territory. If they had just committed to one message for the entire trilogy then either side, Rey being nobody or Rey being somebody, could have worked. She's powerful for no reason, which makes her more of a Mary Sue. When you make a character a nobody, you have to also make them completely unremarkable with no special abilities to go along with it. If you're gonna make them powerful, then they have to earn it through training and hard work. Rey didn't earn shit; she was freakishly gifted from the start, so her being a nobody doesn't work. The message isn't even that "anyone can be a hero"; it's "anyone freakishly gifted from birth can be a hero", which isn't inspirational when most people aren't prodigies like that. If she was going to be nobody, then there should have never been any mystery about her. She should have literally just been a regular person with no special abilities like Finn and Poe. The only reason people wanted Rey to be from a special lineage is because they were led to think she was from one. Subverting expectations for the sake of it, especially after encouraging people to have high expectations, isn't clever writing.
