Right now US men have to register for Selective Service when they turn 18 or you can run into problems in the future or even get into trouble. The US has been doing this for a very long time even though there hasn't been a draft since the Vietnam war. However, very few people actually do this actively. For most people they are automatically registered for Selective Service when they do stuff like renew a driver's license, register to vote, etc.

This just automates all that to make sure there are no stragglers who never register

Currently all men must register with the Selective Service when they turn 18. This proposal, if implemented, would simply make that automatic instead of something each person has to fill out and submit manually.

a draft will not happen unless some fallout-esque shit happens. having a bunch of disgruntled military members doing the bare minimum to avoid prison is counterproductive to the mission. i already work for the DoD though
