Fuck me, it is so obnoxiously long and repetitive. I did not see the need to slowly climb up Sephiroth's angel body, step by step, limb by limb, until we finally make him vomit himself up. The bit where you fight Jenova with characters two-by-two and then all at once was cool, we did not need to do that for another hour and a half. Lifeclinger should absolutely have been the final boss of this game. We already got a bit of Sephiroth in Remake, we could have skipped him in this one. Everything else aside, I think it undermines the story a bit when the narrative keeps going on about what a threat he is after we've whooped him nine times.

Forcing you into certain configurations of characters was fucking annoying, even when I'd made some effort to develop all of them at least a little. Though I must give a special shoutout to the game for removing Cait Sith's materia, putting him back in your party right at the end, and not calling attention to the fact that they did not auto-equip his materia back. I was wondering why I couldn't use Moogle Magic when that little tidbit occurred to me. Luckily, I hated playing as him, so he was exactly as useful as he would have been with materia.

I'd specifically like to call out the Barret/Yuffie/Red fight because Sephiroth loved to make himself immune to physical damage and then hold his hands up like he's going on a roller coaster, meaning Red couldn't reach him and Barret couldn't damage him. I know there is some kind of color coding, so I'm probably just stupid, but I could not figure it out. I don't know why the game abandoned the status effects it'd been using the entire time to denote that something's immune to one type of damage. I guess so you couldn't just use Breach?

Assess gives you no info, so you're just winging it the entire time.

Basically every phase of Bizzaro Sephiroth throws a truckload of constant bullshit at you, constantly knocking you out of attacks. The Bahamut phase was the. Fucking. Worst about it. At least I only got Gigaflare'd once, I saw a comment saying he Gigaflare'd back-to-back when they did it.

But the most annoying thing of all was Sephiroth's final attack. They did not telegraph that it was a OHKO nearly enough.

My first attempt, I had him on one hit point, so obviously it doesn't matter if you damage him enough, you need to actually stagger him out of his stupid little hurricane. Cloud and Aerith were low health and standing near each other, so I just assume it was bad luck that he killed me there.

Second time, I made sure to stay topped up and separated and just concentrated on avoiding damage since - haha - trying to attack Sephiroth while he's doing this means you're bound to take constant damage. Obviously, it's another OHKO.

At this point, I wanted to go the fuck to bed, so I looked it up and it turns out that Octoslash just breaks all the rules in the game. It doesn't matter if you use Planet's Protection, it still damages you. If you're using a limit break, it pulls you out of it. I did a google just now and found a topic on this very websight saying it doesn't even matter if you use Revival Earrings, you still die. So the third time, I made it through the restively easy rest of the fight (Sin Harvest Heartless Angel and all) and managed to kill him.

I understand some degree of this is mad cuz bad, but I did everything in this game aside from Gilgamesh Island with little-to-no issue on dynamic difficulty and this was easily the biggest crock of shit in the game. Way moreso than Odin who I at first called bullshit, but ended up being relatively fair, albeit a huge difficulty spike.

The cherry on the sundae is that after being able to skip every other cutscene in the game, the one before fighting Sephiroth is unskippable. Some real not stealing Kairi's heart action going on, Square Enix has still got it.

I beat Malenia with no summons and I am not even touching hard mode on Rebirth. There's just so much more bullshit going on. Fuck. That.

You pretty much sum up my thoughts and feelings about the final fight. It is just not good from so many perspectives, story being one of them. Shame cuz I love the game.

I enjoyed the final fight because it gets me hyped up on the "what's going to happen" in part 3 but I can understand why people dislike the KH shittery.

My main issue is they build up Sephiroth as the big bad and weve already smashed him twice in two games. One of the games should have ended without Sephiroth being the last boss and I probably think it should have been rebirth.

Even as someone who very much enjoyed Remake's story, I did not like the ending here. It massively undercuts the emotional weight of Aerith's death to go back and forth like that because you're immediately thrown from "that's so sad" to "wtf am I looking at."

And Aerith kind of took the words out of my mouth when she asked Sephiroth, "Why the fuck you want to make a universe built on depression?" I understand his motivation in the original, he wants to be a god because the knowledge of his birth drove him insane and he thinks he's entitled to the world. In this one, his motivation is either nonsense or nonexistent.

And yyyyep. He's already done all of his iconic attacks in the first two games, what's left? I know there's Safer Sephiroth, but you're not going to do the Supernova attack in any way that's not just a game over in this medium.

Yeah, I felt like Jenova should have been the final boss of Rebirth. For someone (or something) that has been the source of all the bad stuff that goes on in that world, it always felt like she was just playing 2nd fiddle to another villain, if she was part of the story at all. It would have been nice for such a major villain to be the final boss of game, even if it was just the 2nd part of a remake trilogy.

Especially since Sephiroth being the final villain again takes away some of the excitement of getting to fight him in the 3rd game.

That I don't agree with so much. I think Jenova isn't really a villain at all tbh, it's long dead and the actual villains have just been using its corpse to do shit.

Re-listen to what the Cetra say in the Temple of the Ancients. Jenova cannot die and its scattered cells will try to reunite.

I remembered that part, I just don't think Jenova has a will of its own. Maybe it could be reborn when reunion happens, but I think Sephiroth has subverted that process and has taken control regardless.

Something Square should elaborate on imo is exactly how sentient Jenova is and was, because that has never been super clear. They better take the opportunity in R3.

IDK, I actually like the ambiguity. I know I've pretty definitely said Sephiroth is in charge, but I do like that you can debate whether it's him, Jenova, or a combination of the two
