I got all the way through FF6, and had all my characters ready to do the final dungeon. But my most hated mechanic was when I had to split into two different parties, and the final dungeon needed three. So I just put it off, played other games, and a year or so later my cousin was borrowing it and he accidentally deleted my save. He was so sorry, and he thought I would be really pissed but... Actually I was kind of relieved that I didn't have it hanging over my head anymore.

Eventually I did go back and beat it. The final dungeon wasn't bad, of course. And the ending was... Fine.

One I finished it but that was the GC version. And one playthrough the last boss could not beat it. I'm currently playing MP1R and just got the grav suit. About halfway done. Always the best part of the game. Spider ball, then grav suit. It opens so much after that

Don't remember think my defensive skills where just subpar till I got put In a do or die situation. As said I only attacked after my life got that low when I was as positive as could be I could land the hit and not get punished for it. That's what made it take so long

Oh also final fantasy 8. I really didn't bother to learn junctioning.. I just threw some shit on there and it was far far from optimal. I often found myself using summons as meat shields. Got the final boss to her monolog speech where if you've beaten it before you'd know that at this point its just about surviving the speech and its over you win.

Well I lost during that speech. Was at least a year before I picked up the game again. Still kick myself over not thinking to pop a heros drink to .are myself invincible. As a item hoarder I had several

Only time I've done that was in GTA: SA recently, got to the end where you need to have a certain number of gang territories under your control to unlock the final mission and decided to quit, shit was just too tedious and annoying to bother with.

Yea I got up to the end of elden ring and lost intrest in trying to defeat the elden beast. They patched that battle recently to let you use your stead in the 2nd phase now so I may go back to it.

A lot of old RPGs for some reason expected you to suddenly devote your life to grinding right at the final dungeon.

On my last Earthbound playthrough, I gave up there. It's honestly kind of a crappy game. I only replayed it because Mrs. Devsman is such a fan and was watching along. But she lost interest at that point too.

Xenosaga Ep. 1 and Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings are two games where I got to the endgame and lost my motivation to keep going.

Cuphead and Metroid Dread were two games where I gave up because I couldn't beat the final boss (or in Cuphead's case the penultimate boss) and had no motivation to 'git gud' enough to power through it.

There's also plenty of games that I beat at least once but rarely if ever end up finishing on replay. I've got well over a dozen characters apiece on New Vegas and Fallout 4 (and thousands of play hours logged), yet I haven't actually finished a NV playthrough in years, and I've only ever beaten 4's main quest once. Hell, even my last playthrough of Chrono Trigger fell victim to this; got about halfway through the Black Omen and just didn't finish it.

The only game I could never, ever do this to is Final Fantasy 6; it's by far my favorite ending in gaming, and it'd be a crime to miss out on it on any given playthrough.

Max Payne 3 is another game I played quite a while and just couldn't finish.

I don't know what it was, but I just did not like the shooting in that game at all. It felt slow and well behind the shooting of fps like Halo or 3ps like Gears of War. Something about it just didn't work for me. Think I got a level or two from the end and that was through forcing myself to put in like an hour after work now and then and I still couldn't finish it.
