Doesn't this mean nothing actually changes, since presidents always had immunity for official actions, and it just denied him further immunity? I thought the whole point was that he was fighting for TOTAL immunity.

Yes. At the time, civil liability was the sole consideration because the Nixon administration was refusing to comply with a subpoena in connection with Watergate. Ford's pardon nixed the criminal prosecution constitutional question from the get go.

In the documents case, Trump is being charged for things that happened well after he was out of office. NARA was asking for the documents back for about a year and then they referred the case to the DoJ. Trump obstructed the DoJs investigation in 2022 and unlawfully withheld the documents after the DoJ subpoena.

The whole point of the SCOTUS taking this up was to stall for time so Trump could push his trials until after the election - where if he won he would just be able to ignore all of it.

That's why the SCOTUS waited until the last possible moment to take the case, waited until the last possible moment to issue a ruling on it, and made one that doesn't directly save Trump, but sets a horrendous precedent moving forward that will absolutely help with the whole "fascist takeover of America" thing.

They're going to remand to the lower courts to decide what counts as an official act. So courts decide. But that opinion will surely be appealed and probably granted cert, especially if the circuit court says the Jan 6th stuff weren't official acts. So this will stay tied up in court for quite a bit longer.

It does seem like he's still in trouble for the stuff he did before and after taking office at least. But this is still a terrible decision for democracy because Presidents now have a very wide zone of absolute immunity and an even wider zone of presumed immunity. It'll embolden the next autocrat we elect.
