Its not just the harmful effects it causes to the person and those around them, its the addiction.

I work in a restaurant and smokers' addiction will have them believe that a smoke break is more important than anything to them. I'll need the bathroom or need to eat something(I don't get official lunch breaks) and they'll say "Well i haven't had a smoke break in awhile" and they will say it with such urgency right after telling them that I hadn't gone to the bathroom yet and I got there at 6 and its 12 pm.

Smoking is a real curse and there's no positive to them at all and yet here we are....

I dont want them outlawed. Everyone who smokes them is aware that they can and will be harmful if you smoke enough.

As long as kids arent getting them, then its up to people to choose what they want to do with them.

Nope, this is one of those moments that I'll say nah to. Why? Because they are actually a problem to other people and not just smokers. Second hand smoke is even worse than smoking it. So the fact that if you walk past one, you're getting that in your lungs so yes, its a problem for other people and that isn't the same as say porn.

I'm glad I never started and I hate the mindset people have about it. They make it sound like its the most important thing in the world and I got into an argument with someone I work with. I was trying to sit down to eat a little something and it suddenly got busy, she started yelling about how she deserves a smoke break because she was the only one doing work when half the time I've seen her, she was talking to someone.

I got 'hangry' and said something I shouldn't after she ended up storming in the back and leaving her tables dirty when a group of 12 came in. I ended up being the one who had to take them and ended up losing out on eating. I was starving, had to pee, and dehydrated but her smoke is way more important than any of that. If I tell my boss, my coworkers, or anyone that I need the bathroom its like "Well I havne't smoked yet and I really need it".

Sorry but there's no excuse. How come the things I NEED to do for basic life are less important than an addiction that's not necessary?

You're right but that's why they had to drink in secret. At least for me, this works since they'll try to smoke and they can't get away with it since the smoking area is in the open and the only way they'd get to smoke would be in doors(with cameras) so they'll get caught and arrested.

It might be worse for the rest of the world but right now I'm feeling angsty and petty and I just need a big ole rant. I have my own addictions(I realize the internet is my addiction) sure its not a big one but its one that's given me a lot of panic when I didn't have it. I don't know the actual chemical feelings that smokers have but I know that I hate it.

One of my coworkers will smoke a whole pack coming into work. That's 7 hours and every cigarette gone. Then she'll say she'll talk about how hard she's worked when I haven't had a break in 7 hours just because I don't smoke.

We had wild fires a few years ago. The sky was pure orange and it was raining pieces of ash. We almost got evacuated and we were lucky compared to the entire cities that were burned down. All because of a cigarette, and people STILL smoke here and throw them out the window. Dont even get me started on irresponsible firework shows.

if no one's said it to you, I'm proud of you. That sounds hard and my mom stopped smoking and I was proud of her too.

No need. People are already smoking less than previous generations, the tobacco companies are outlawed from advertising cigarettes in a positive light, the places you can smoke are very restricted, and current smokers greatly discourage others from starting. Completely outlawing it would just encourage people to smoke.

I will not feel sorry for people who see their 'fix' above basic human needs. Choosing to smoke over anything is pretty messed up and you make them sound so pitiful. I shouldn't have to worry about passing out from dehydration(again) or getting weak from hunger or pissing myself just because someone wants to go outside to take a drag and 'chill'. Especially those who will eat and then go outside to smoke, prolonging their breaks.

Let's do what Nintendo does to their Switch games and make all cigarettes have a bad taste in their mouth while they do it. It won't stop them from doing it but at least they'll be miserable.

I quit cigarettes in 2015 after a terrible case of bronchitis the second winter in a row. Haven't had it since.

I was paying over $8 a pack then. Saw the prices a couple weeks ago and they're over $14 a pack now.

What a huge waste of money on something that's going to make you sick and/or kill you. There's really no question of if it will do these things, just when.

my best friend is a smoker and he's always on the edge of breaking. If he gets sick and can't work, he will probably be unable to pay rent. On the other hand, I am working as well and I have enough to pay rent, my bills, enjoy a few hobbies while he can barely handle the hobbies he does have. I'm not going to say its all to smoking but it definitely puts an impact in his life.

I've told him to go to the doctor or dentist for a few things that trouble him but he can't afford it.

I didnt mean to imply anything about your specific work scenario. But, surprisingly I dont think anyone has said it yet, thats not a cigarette problem. Thats an employer/employee problem.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

I meanyes? Theyre addicted to deathsticks. Their addiction mandates they go to specific areas to use, for the good of public health. They have to plan their limited break time around trying to get their fix.

I hate cigarettes, but I hate restricting freedom more. I dont know of a single place I can even go in public where Im likely to encounter a smoker anymore, because its been so tightly restricted. The smoke bothers me, so its kind of nice.

But I also know citizens can report you here if you throw a cigarette butt out the window of your car. I know that the majority of hospital campuses have completely banned tobacco use; even chew, which is disgusting, but seems excessive. Im down with people having a right to breath fresh air (or whatever type of air their city has), but I dont like completely removing anyones personal freedoms. If they want to waste their money and potentially kill themselves, thats their business, and banning cigarettes for some ridiculous greater good would just be an example of government overreach.

But cigarettes play the biggest part in the problem. Everyone who is causing the problem are all smokers and its never not been an issue in the 12 years I've worked there. Hell, its a problem anywhere you go that smokers take precedence. There's even memes about how people who smoke believe they're the only ones deserving of a break.

Hell, the assistant manager, years ago, when I started asked if I smoked and I said 'no' and she said "Then why are you going outside? Get to work"

Seriously, that sounds like a trash employer. I dont know what else to say. The only time and place Ive ever heard of smokers getting that kind of favoritism was in the military decades ago. Stories went that smokers got their smoke break while non-smokers kept doing drills. A lot of smokers apparently started during basic training because of that.

But thats likethe 80s. If you work at a national chain, contact HR. That shouldnt be a thing anymore.

NZ was going to bring in a law that anyone born in 2009 or later will never be able to legally buy tobacco (those who are under 18 now but born before that would've been able to buy once they turn 18 still), but they abandoned that.

I kind of like the general concept, but I'd have done something like, every 6 months, increase the minimum age by 3 months, maybe with an exemption for anyone who reached the age but then got cut off again by the next increase.

Cigars are fun though I don't smoke those anymore. They at least can smell good, cigarette smoke never really does and lingers in a bad way. I still hung out with tons of friends when I was younger who smoked and at bars too in my earlier 30s. It never bothered me personally. Strangely enough.

Just from my history I've told here many times. It's taken so many loved ones not just from me, other people's loved ones. My friend for example of 7 family members 4 died from cigarette related illiness including herself. Another friend similar number and he's the surviving member (4 other siblings) still smokes. So 8 of 12 are dead. Not one made it to 70. If you can quit, try. If you keep smoking the numbers are against you.

It's moderation and lifestyle and stress/job. But I never did see any benefit from cigarettes at least cigars seemed a bit cool and ya weren't supposed to inhale them so it just coated your mouth a lot which was its own displeasure eventually. *sighs*
