Life was a lot shorter and more brutal.

So there was a bit more dark humour, and a little less worrying about traumatising children.

Yeah, someone (*ahem* a 'literary critic') told me that it basically boils down to the fact that mortality was so high in the past that these 'children's stories' served to desensitize children to morbid outcomes.

Because things made for kids were always made by adults, and adults tend to be more adult, often forgetting how to treat kids, specially ones of different ages.

We also had kid movies that really weren't for kids. Gremlins?

In the last 20-30 years, there has been strides towards making things actually kid-friendly. And part of this is they usually stay away from things that provoke negative emotions or sadness.

In other words, yes, more sheltered today than they were from decades past.

They were cautionary tales, like how we still tell kids to watch out for strangers. Over half of them can be summarized as, "don't go into the forest or a wolf might eat you."
