I have no idea what kids are up to these days, but last time I passed a school, there were a lot of kids getting out with a lot of backpacks.

Kids are kinda weird. Something that small being able to hold their giant heads up, let alone a backpack.

Pretty much every Barnes and Noble I've visited in the metro DC area has a dedicated and sizeable HP section. Even the one that was 2 floors and then downgraded to 1 and is now around the size of a restaurant kept theirs

I also maybe bought a Hufflepuff keychain from there recently

You think they put all that extra merchandise there for kids? Don't kid yourself. It still pulls in adults non-stop.

Harry Potter is pretty much the biggest thing to happen to books since the printing press. It's legacy is gonna be a lot longer than 25 years.

This. It was lightning in a bottle. Yes, there is much better written stuff (hell, theres better written stuff about a wizard named Harry), but it doesnt have the mass appeal of HP.

which, it sucks that the writer is such a terrible person. It really destroys the magic that the books and movies brought.

Eh. I read a lot of HP fanfic between books to this day, so it doesnt bother me as Im so far removed from her work anyway.

It benefited from getting big right before the internet took up a larger portion of kids' attention. That carried onto early web 2.0 where people could post fanfics and discuss online. Now media is far too fractured to concentrate such a fanbase.

Oh boo hoo learn to separate literature from the writer.

The HP books had good messages in them even if Rowling herself isn't as tolerant as her writings.

HP is insanely popular. Millennial parents who grew up with it are sharing it with their kids now.

Plus the 4 houses gimmick is great for marketing and merchandising.

A lot of people just prefer actual pages they can turn or don't want to be looking at a screen the entire time they are reading. Unlike Movies which can only be viewed on a screen, physical copies are a different experience to electronic copies of the same book.

This is why I don't think Skullduggery Pleasant got a movie deal. The books are badly written, but if done right, would have made great movies.

That's kind of the point when people use the whole "Well I can't separate the art from the artist so long as the artist is getting paid" sort of deal when said Artist is huge.

It allows them to stand on a pedestal and pretend to lord themselves over others until the artist literally dies.
