Spending $140/month for 1 Gbps down/100 Mbps up

there's a 2 Gbps down plan available, but 100 up is hard capped (man I wish this place had fiber )

Day to day surfing, nope, not a damn thing. Nothing beyond the low double digits of mbit is going to make a difference to that; latency is far more important there (and even DSL can keep latency low enough to be not a problem for this; it's mostly only an issue on 3G or satellite connections these days).

Streaming videos, probably not. Even at 8K, once you get into the triple digit megabits you're probably gonna be good. If you've got a few people using it at once you might reach the point where gigabit is necessary, but you're probably not gonna have multiple people streaming at 8K at once unless you're like a super-high-end hotel or something (in which case you've probably got something far beyond what consumer connections even resemble).

The one place I can see it making a difference is large downloads or uploads. Even then, you're gonna need to be doing a lot of them before you can justify the cost; gigabit is already going to download, say, a modern AAA videogame in half an hour or so, and very few people are going to be uploading or downloading anything on that scale anywhere near frequently enough to justify the extra cost.

Now if you're going beyond typical end-user cases and doing certain hobbyist (or outright business) things like, say, running a web server off a physical device you own; that could definitely be a different matter.

Same for me actually.

Just the basic spectrum internet in south carolina, its supposed to be like 300 down 10 up but all I'm getting is around 100 down atm.

Its been storming on and off the past few days and I probably got to reset the modem and router at some point.

Ironically living in the middle of cornfields in the Midwest I pay for 100 and consistently pull between 400 and 500 down. My ISP constantly over delivers and have for 20 years. I'm told it is because I'm on my own node in our little populated area compared to bigger cities. They do throttle the upload though which I don't care about. I get about 50 up.

Yep. Internet options in the southern states suck so much ass.

Verizon had a fiber option that I was interested in trying and they are in my town, but the problem is said fiber connection is only on the north and west side of town....I'm on the south. Other than that, its either spectrum, some crappy satellite internet, or dial-up.

My address is eligible for the 1Gb, 2Gb, 5Gb, and 8Gb duplex but I just don't think I'd ever take advantage of it. I have been considering going up to 2Gb now that my new desktop has a 2.5Gb Ethernet adapter but I think that's the only device in my house that can use it. Might be useful for adding more cameras.

literally why? In what scenario would you ever run into an issue maxing your bandwidth at even 2Gb? To even see something come close to those download speeds on a single device youd need a PC/server with NIC teaming configured or something which I doubt is the case

Does he have like 20 kids that are actively streaming 4K porn at 60 fps all hours of the day? Does he need to download the entirety of the internet in a couple months?

The only practical reason to get anywhere near there is to have a redundant ISP and maybe run it as load balancing and/or feed your neighbors via like a PTP link (Ive configured this for people in rural TX who rent adjacent properties or live next to family, etc.) / run a shitty little WISP out of your house. At that point it costs more money to get going than itd be worth

5Gb is like 600MB/s
A standard SATA SSD is gonna hit about 500MB/s and a NVMe will hit 3000MB/s+

4k streaming just needs 50mbps.

Your downloads would be torrent box level for this speed to matter.

It really depends on what you do with it. I havent asked him specifically what he does on his network, but I know he has servers set up. Hes a system administrator and hes very much into setting up his own server for various purposes. We worked together at a network operations center a while back. I got promoted to junior network engineer and he got promoted to junior system administrator at the same time.

Yes, but Im not sure what he uses his home internet for. I know hes starting up his own business of some sort, but I havent asked him about the specifics of it.

ThisIsAKnoife posted...
literally why?

Not sure what he uses it for, but hes paying $125/month. Im paying $90 for 1 gig and could see myself paying another $35 for 5 Gbps. I dont have 10 gig infrastructure in my house or the availability of 2, 5, or 8 Gbps internet.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who has the option of even 5G let alone fiber, but it's certianly better than traditional satellite for people who have no (or shit) terrestrial options.

I lived on 20mb/s internet for years and jumped on Starlink ASAP and it was one of the best QoL improvements Ive had. My area was upgraded to fibre a while back so I dont have Starlink anymore, but I dont regret getting it for a second

You're probably not on 5G or fibre if you're getting 20 mbit. Even most 4G is faster than that (though slower than Starlink).

Thats what I mean. it used to be atrocious so I got starlink, which was a heavy QOL improvement. my area now has fibre and im on 1GB so starlink doesnt make sense anymore for me, but, it was definitely worth the money back before I had access to fibre
