"investigations are boring" doesn't mean they should be like a bad version of cross examination. Make them more interesting in other ways. Danganronpa investigations are much more interesting than Ace Attorney ones. Put on some exciting music or something. You're essentially filling the break between court segments with more court-y stuff, which doesn't make for a good break between court parts or vice versa.

It makes actually wringing the truth out of suspects on the stand less engaging when you have magic power to just tell who is lying and the only reason you don't actually know who did it before trial is because Phoenix is too stupid to ask the pertinent questions like "did you do it" and then when that actually happens in a later case, the game uses some shoddy logic to get around the obvious conclusion.

It also makes the investigations very "fetch quest"-y. It's less than they flow naturally but rather you have to get this thing to break this lock to progress.

I won't say all investigations in the first game are better, but I think the investigations in the second and third game have to pull more weight for an equivalent result, because they have to make up for the magatama fetch questing and testimonying.
