Actually, I heard how DEI benefitted him because he was so poor that his poverty was how he got into Yale. While the right tries to make it an exclusively racial/gender thing, it's not purely about race/ethnicity/gender. Just like how the biggest group who takes advantage of social services are impoverished rural whites, not the non-whites they demonize as being "welfare queens".

At least he was fairly well-liked in the public sphere IIRC. There was even an episode of Tiny Toons that caricaturized him as an affable protagonist (by contrast, Bush Sr. wasn't painted nearly as likeable in that same ep).

And he did ultimately play a role in saving our democracy leading up to Jan. 6th (Pence called him for advice on whether or not he should cave to Trump's pressure, and Quayle told him in no uncertain terms that he absolutely had to certify the election).

Indeed. Dan Quayle, one of the saviors of democracy, is a hell of a thing.

Quayle was no genius, but the "potatoe" thing was overblown. My mom was his age, and she said that was how they were taught to spell it in school.

It was just that between then and when he was running for VP, that changed, and he didn't realize it, so he looked like a fool to a large part of the populace.
