This seems unlikely to me in this case, because obvious interests sufficiently explain everything.

Trump loves to have former enemies grovel to him, and this kind of VP pick is also a big "fuck you" to everyone outside his disgusting cult. Maybe he even gets some of that Peter Thiel $$$.

As for Vance, being Thiel's agent a heartbeat away from the presidency (if these fuckers win) is sufficient. He'll just be sure to betray Trump before Trump betrays him, if it comes to that.
