It still has to pass in the House, but it passed with only three dissenting votes so it's not looking good. If you aren't familiar with KOSA, its proponents claim this law will help protect minors online. It's detractors fear it will be used to remove anonymity online by means of mandatory age verification everywhere, and that it will be used as a tool of mass censorship. Posts attributed to the Heritage Foundation are floating around. Apparently they are quite keen on using KOSA to censor LGBT content online.

Only Sens. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Rand Paul (R-Ky.), and Mike Lee (R-Utah) opposed the bills.

Rand Paul voting against it is no surprise

Kind of unearthed they got Sanders, Warren, and Tuberville to agree to the same legislation

Tuberville is a joke, Warren was always an establishment-friendly progressive, and as Bernie gained influence in the party he steadily sold out on fringe issues like this too.

Glad Rand is keeping Ron's legacy alive.

They don't want to parent kids. This is basically to out and punish the entire LGBTQ community.

Don't worry though, as soon as the glaringly massive security risks with this out a politician for looking in to some extremely questionable porn it'll likely get pulled back or massively changed.

Since it'll be federal law, it'll probably require a passport or Real ID, which is an additional burden, because some states have been allowed to drag their feet on implementing Real ID.

That's a guess on my part, though.

Because people with rights don't drive the economy forward. It won't be too long until some form of slavery is back in action, probably a few decades... It'll likely have a prettier name. Maybe a housing initiative--"Free housing and utilities for contractual employment!"

Uninformed foreigner here.

Do these things ever have much of an impact?

There's been a lot of these "if this passes, it will destroy the internet" bills over the years. They either don't pass or get axed and forgotten.

Whenever these get brought up, is it just alarmism and fear mongering? Or should you actually be scared?

It seems some people get a bit too worked up over these things like it's the end of the world. I could be wrong.

Do you recall how when you were young, you had to always tick a box saying that you were 13 or older? You can thank COPPA for that.

Remember how some years back suddenly every website everywhere started pestering you about their Terms of Use changing and everything asking you to accept their cookies? You can thank the GDPR for that.

These bills do absolutely have a large impact on the landscape of the internet. So far, massive ones with a potential to stifle speech and expression have (mostly) been blocked. (Think back to stuff like SOPPA and PIPPA related protests, the anti-meme bills in the UK parliament, etc) The reason why these bills seem inconsequential is because people fought and won to stop it.

The House will almost certainly pass this bill, and I cannot see a world in where Biden does not sign it.
