It was on Unimas a Spanish channel and the theatrical release not the one with alternate ending. Either way the theatrical release is where the meme is from. That he lived years by himself and only lasted 1 day with a woman.

How did that even become a thing? I thought it was clear from the plot after his dog died he went on a revenge/suicide mission. And it was the woman who saved his life.

This isnt stated in the theatrical release. But with the alternate ending which is the cannon ending. Instead of being mindless zombies/vampires. They have feelings and might be smart. It is possible they knew where he lived all along and it was kidnapping the alpha male partner what caused them to rise against him.

But even without that he would have died if the woman didnt save him.

The Book gives a lot better reasons and plot. The movie muddles the theme and point of the book.

Spoilers

In the book Neville is killing the Vampires while they sleep during the day. And he hunkers down during the night as the come to taunt and harass him, the vampires can talk but arent all there mentally. Midway through the book he meets a person (I think its a woman. Been a while) that seems like she is normal. So he breaks his rules and lets her in. Most likely due to being alone for so long. Anyway it turns out she part of a vampire society that isnt a mindless monster like the ones that had been attacking him. She is able to subdue him and bring him back to the city these new vampires have made. It turns out Neville has become the boogeyman to these people due to his day time activities of killing them off. So in the end he realizes that in a world full of vampires that have rebuilt a societythat he has become Legend just like vampires were originally. Hence the title I am Legend

Thats a down and dirty version of it but I liked that theme more than the movie. I think there are previous versions done in film that are closer to the book but have different titles. I havent seen those that. One I think is The Omega Man?

The people making the meme didnt read the book. It is about the theatrical release. I think what happened is I made a topic about a meme but maybe no one even knew the meme existed.

Like I said in OP the alternate ending already kinda discredited the meme since he didnt die in that.

The book and the other adaptations are a lot more explicit about them being vampires. I don't know who's baffling decision it was to make them light sensitive naked mole rats in I Am Will Smith.

Yeah, the Omega Man is closer to the book, still got a few changes to give it a happier ending.

The alternate ending for the movie is closer to the book ending. Where instead of Neville curing the female darkseeker and and killing himself he realizes they are more intelligent than he originally believed, allows the male and female to leave, learning that to them he is the monster. And he lives.

It wasn't really that good. With all the deleted scenes and the alternate ending. Which is why instead of talking about the theatrical release the thread has shifted to the book or the alternate ending for explanations. The theatrical release you are left thinking they zombies/monsters that need a cure. Will Smith character finds the cure and sacrifices himself. He is the legend for saving humanity with a cure to this disease.

Compared to the alternate ending where he learns a lesson. That he was wrong and they had intelligence.

Yes, I know the difference between the endings. My post was only about the movie showing they had intelligence, which setting a trap humans have been setting for animals for hundreds of years demonstrates.

Yea it is a shame the theatrical version cut out the argument on the trap between Anna and Robert. Where Anna thought they were getting smarter but Robert pushed back on it. It was left vague and you had to do that thinking on your own it was the darkseekers.

It shows some intelligence, but only a cunning, predatory kind of intelligence, like a xenomorph or some other monster. By itself it doesn't suggest that they might have a complex society like we do, or be capable of things like love and altruism.

Some directors value the mystery of "just how intelligent are they?"

I like both endings, for clarity. I value the noble sacrifice in the theatrical version, however I also like him learning a lesson in the alternate ending.

It was a trap using a multiple variables to set it up. It wasn't like they just dug a big hole they hoped he eventually fell into while distracted. They used a mannequin as a decoy which led to a rope around his feed that had him dangling like how hunters do to animals out in the wild. That takes more sophistication than "hur hur hur I'm a predoator hur hur". That takes actual understanding of cause and effect and point A leading to point B for end results, along with the manual setup to make it happen.

Is it the same level of intelligence as what someone posted in the books? Obviously not, however it's more intelligence than Jurassic Park's "clever girl", for an example. It was an actual trap set up that humans use for animals in the wild.

I could see a xenomorph doing something like that. My point was, the alternate ending is about more than just showing intelligence. It shows that they have emotions like love, and empathy, and real human relationships with each other.

Even if they're super intelligent, more intelligent than us, if they're all just unfeeling killing machines then there is no reason to sympathize with them. If anything, that makes it even more important to kill them because their intelligence makes them so dangerous.

The point of the novel is that these mutated humans aren't monsters, they're the next kind of humans who will take over the world, build societies, create their own art, their own history. They will live, love, and enjoy full lives just like we did. And we "regular" humans--particularly the protagonist--are what they overcome, the antagonists of legend that were preventing them from living in peace and harmony.

The alternate ending conveys this to some degree. The theatrical ending does not. Just having them set a trap to kill the protagonist, no matter how intelligent, is not enough to make us sympathize and see them as human.

That's all I was referencing in terms of intelligence.

They never felt like that to me after they set that trap. And, no, IO don't see a xenomorph setting up a trap like that. More of a "clever girl" trap, sure, however nothing involving a rope and spring/trigger system.
