Welcome to the next round of Board 8 watching and ranking movies! Two years ago, a handful of people from board 8 ranked 30 organized crime films. I'll give you all of one guess what movie came out as #1 - it starts with a G and doesn't end in "oodfellas."

This time around, we're watching 30 more crime films, primarily ones that aren't so organized. So instead of the mob, the mafia and the yakuza, you get a lot more heists, lone gunmen, assassins, and people acting independently. That's not to say the mobs don't show up - you'll definitely see some appearances from gangs and gang-related situations, but in most of these, they hold less of a focus. Think less Scorsese and more Coen.

As of now, I'm estimating a wrap-up date of November 1, giving around 2.5 months to watch, rank and write-up the following 30 movies:

M - 1931
Dial M for Murder - 1954
Bonnie and Clyde - 1967
A Clockwork Orange - 1971
The French Connection - 1971
Serpico - 1973
Dog Day Afternoon - 1975
Taxi Driver - 1976
Blood Simple - 1984
Raising Arizona - 1987
Lon: The Professional - 1994
Heat - 1995
Fargo - 1996
Jackie Brown - 1997
The Big Lebowski - 1998
The Boondock Saints - 1999
Ocean's Eleven - 2001
The Man Who Wasn't There - 2001
Oldboy - 2003
No Country for Old Men - 2007
Burn After Reading - 2008
The Town - 2010
Drive - 2011
Nightcrawler - 2014
Baby Driver - 2017
Good Time - 2017
Bad Times at the El Royale - 2018
Shoplifters - 2018
You Were Never Really Here - 2019
Bullet Train - 2022

If you haven't participated before, all you have to do is watch the movies and rank them from best to worst. Write-ups are optional but highly encouraged, but the write-ups can be anything from a single sentence to a whole essay depending on how passionate you are about a particular movie. Once completed, the rankings can be sent to [email protected] (ideally in the form of a Google doc or sheet)

As for next time around, I know Vis put together a "So Bad It's Good" list that I believe is planned for the next up after Crime 2

a few others that were mentioned in the previous topic, please confirm if any of the proposed lists want to officially get into the queue:

Karo - Animation 5 (confirmed to host at some point, but not sure if the list is ready yet?)
Tangy - mentioned running a movies about movies list at some point, not sure if that's still happening?
Suprak - mentioned doing a CYOA guilty pleasure list
Seginus - mentioned a best of Nicolas Cage list
Bitto - mentioned a time travel/time loop list
@LightningStrikes - mentioned hosting a DCEU list
Snake - has mentioned a few different lists in the past, I think it's mostly a question of hosting availability?

It can be ready right after Inviso's, which I think would be a good timeframe for hosting if there are no objections.

Damn, 7 Coen brothers movies? This list is gonna get all metaphysical and shit

The Nic Cage thing is sort of a long-term idea, a gauntlet list might not work depending on how slow I go. I think Raising Arizona will be the first time he actually appears in these topics, but if he starts showing up a bunch in future lists it might get redundant. And I certainly wouldn't blame Inviso for throwing some of his classics in the "so bad it's good" category!

So behind the scenes of how this came to be, I was originally going to run a Coen Bros. list specifically, but then my Crime list (which was originally just one long list) started running over, and Scarletspeed7 stopped participating in rankings, so I sort of combined the Organized Crime overflow, the Coen Bros. and Scarlet's scrapped Heists list as a base for a new Crime list

Also, anyone participating in this who is also interested in the "So Bad It's Good" list, please take a look at what I have so far just let me know if there are any major omissions you think I should include, or films that maybe shouldn't be on the list in the first place.

I feel like from the last few years, Pinocchio: A True Story is worth consideration (if it's not part of Animation 5)

I'd also say like Madame Web but maybe that's better saved for like a non-MCU marvel list

Se7en was on the 90s Horror list and LA Confidential was on Organized Crime

Murder By Death I considered including but eventually scrapped from the list, and Glass Onion I left off since it's a sequel and there's only so many spots. The others are on the list

3 down and kind of feeling like it's been 3/3 so far. Definitely no bad movies yet.

I am realizing the difficulty of doing a ranking just based on a single watch though. Scanning the list above again, this feels like it's likely going to be a "one of these movies had to be last" situation.
