Kind of curious. I love the genre, but there arent any shmups with longevity besides score chasing. There are lots of beat em ups with to s of u lockables, mousou game, platformers, fighting games. They have a tons of things, unlockable characters, rpg elements, randomly generated modes. Shmups never have this,

Is there a roguelike shmup? Im not talking twinstick, i mean a traditionally styled vertical or hori shmup.

I doubt a randomly generated one could be good, but im just curious if it has ever been attempted.

I also know there was a Breakout clone on DSIware that had thousands of levels in it, but it seems to have been wiped off the face of the planet. Anyone know of this?

The most recent R-Type game, Final 2 or 3 (I think they're the same game only with a next-gen update for the PS5 called 3) has a quite a bit of content and unlockable ships.

Right, i do own those. That might be the closest to what i described that isnt a grindy mobile game

Not a shmup, and not what Im talking about.

I want a single game with a lot of content, things to unlock, goals to work towards besides just score. The guy who said R-Type Final 2/3 was good.

Do you allow evolutions? Because they basically evolved into corridor shooters like Star Fox eventually.

And well, at that point we have to allow "all range mode" ones like Ace Combat.
Yes, this is not what you are specifically looking for.

Still... if you don't mind something weird I do remember an old flash game where, rather than a fighter or something, you instead buy and build up pieces of a mobile base, essentially becoming what in other games would be a final boss. You also fight against other boss type superships.

I don't remember the name though, but I am sure Armor Games or someplace that has set up an alternate player has it somewhere.

Haven't tried any. But seems to be the top choices or only ones.

The first one you posted looks ok.

Oh also, Darius Burst CS+ is probably the closest thing Ive found.
