Where I live in the Midwest housing is some of the most reasonable in all of the U.S. You can buy good houses in small towns just 10 or 15 miles outside of bigger cities for like between 100K and 150K that are perfectly decent places to live. As long as you can get by with reasonable housing, everything else kind of falls into place.
