The developer wants to do a remaster of the first four games as well as do an entirely new entry.

However, they're at the whims of Bamco and they've essentially said "No you".

At least we managed to get that remastered g.u. collection someway or the other. In general though yeah, I miss this IP.

The WHAM twist and the song at the end of volume 2 still stays in my mind all these years later.

I'm currently replaying G.U. and watching Ovan at the beginning, I'm like "Maaaan, why didn't I see this coming!?" It makes sense AFTER the fact and I hate it lol

Bamco has been putting out garbage lately. I'd love a remake of the first 4 games but I'd want to play a new game with updated gameplay and I'd like to see what new consoles could do to this series.

Man, there's a lot that seemed to age so well with the game also. Several news stories are crazy accurate in the way the world works, especially with online addiction. I loved this game for how it felt like a MMO simulator and that I was plugged into a living and breathing world...I know it's not aged gracefully but I still feel that immersion when it comes to some of the characters.

I also feel that it seems like the higher ups just think this would be inferior to Sword Art Online...even though Dot Hack did it first and always had a superior story then Sword Art has had...sigh. Hell since Namco makes the Sword Art games to they might not want Dot Hack games because they feel the might compete with each other or something, sigh.

My only issues with the remaster were the game feels awful at 60fps and they made it even easier since you level faster.

Sword Art started off okay and then turned into slice of life and got boring real fast. Dot Hack is more mature and I always enjoyed it a lot more. It pulls off that kind of game better and the fact that you aren't playing just the same main character in the different series means that you're not forced to live out whatever the anime did like Sword Art Online and Kirito.

It's not just that .Hack isn't as popular, or that SAO became popular, it's that there are dozens of properties that copy both of those IPs now that it's its own subgenre now.

IMOQ would need to be completely redone from the ground up, if those got remade their age would be impossible to ignore.

yet I can't say I think any of them are better than Dot Hack but that's my own personal belief. I love the series and the recurring themes and how characters are 'secretly' other characters from past games and shows such as Haseo and Endrance

I've tried to like SAO but the first anime screwed that up and I watched a little of season 3 and liked it but just up and stopped for some reason. The original set of games made me think of how Japanese anime portray their MMO and I love that because we don't really get that too often in real MMOs.

Also, I replayed some of the old Dot Hack and it def needs a remake because even walking around in that game is annoying. Turning, especially, is ridiculously annoying. I feel like I'm pressing on brakes when I try to turn my character. I like the 'difficulty' and the length of the dungeons compared to G.U. which feels much easier....I feel like if they remade the original games, they should fill it up with more optional things that make it a lot like G.U. but keep the difficulty. I can't tell you how many times I've almost died playing that game lol...

but yeah, the controls suck...probably part of the reason. Attacking felt wonky, for instance.

Yeah, I don't like Kirito. He has no real character. It's always funny to hear people complain about Haseo but he was a multi-faceted character and while Kite was sorta 'there', Haseo was a definite upgrade and his arc is amazing to me. People hate the 'edgy' character but he was a teenager who used to be a straight up villain in a past 'life' and then got betrayed his first day in the new game and then a whole slew of things happened after the first five minutes of Rebirth where he lost a loved one. So yeah, he's got a whole lot of stuff to deal with and I have no clue why people hate him because...seriously lol. Atoli and the others are just annoying to be around.

I don't know. I didn't have the internet when G.U. came out so I didn't even know it did well. I just knew that it was games I wanted to buy and I never got to buy games very often because I was poor but Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts 2, and all three of the G.U. games were the only games I ever saved up money for until I got my own job.

It's dumb for the same reasons the FF15 movie was dumb. They were created at the same time and designed to be symbiotic so that you couldn't get everything from game by playing the game.

???? I had no problem understanding the first series nor G.U. and I hadn't watched Sign or Roots at the time or any of the games.

The FF15 movie wasn't necessary either. They told you literally what happened but the movie was a nice way of giving us the idea of what exactly happened. Didn't need to watch the FF15 anime either.

So funfact about IMOQ, they had to fill up the CDs for each game with filler data because there wasn't enough actual content on each individual disc to meet Sony's requirements for publication. There was absolutely zero reason to release the whole story on 4 fucking individual games.

From tv tropes:
In fact, the first game, Infection, has the data for almost every enemy, character, item, equipment, and area of all four games, although it's inaccessible by normal means. Some of this data was changed in the sequels, but they were indeed already there. Plus, all the four games have a huge dump file which serves the only purpose of increasing the disc size so it can fit Sony's minimum disc size requirement for PS2 games. The four games could probably be fit in a single disc.

Yeah, as an adult, I've got nothing but contempt for the original quadrilogy. GU at least introduced new mechanics with each game (and was 1 game shorter to begin with).

Yeah, IMOQ, if you use a cheat device you can access damn near every single area, fight every enemy and get high level weapons in Infection.

Story related areas, outside of the Root Towns, in future games aren't accessible though because you need to actually progress to get Area Words

Possibly a stupid question. If there were basically all 4 games on each disk, why did they need filler data? Were all 4 games combined still way too small for Sony?

They themselves wanted to do the 4 game thing intentionally, lol. They did that whole grand project thing with the various anime, novel etc. spin-offs, and the multi-game thing was a idea they had to simulate the feeling of a MMO game getting expansion editions.

In retrospect yeah, it was kind of a cash grab since those 4 games really could have just been 1 game.

It makes plenty of sense when you look into it. Namco Bandai was going through a massive shake up in its company and stopped doing basically anything in the west for a bit in its quest to become Bandai Namco and .Hack was just one of the things that got dropped in the period. And because it was nowhere near as big anymore, especially as it wasn't as big in Japan as it was in America, it just got the "soft" chopping block for a period before just ultimately being dropped as a relic of its time.
