These guys were one of the better things in 8. Cute, but cool design that can easily by remixed, just like moogles. They made some small cameos in other games, but never got the same treatment as Chocobos, Moogles, Tonberry, or Cactuar.

They're too closely related to Squall.

I mean, lions are his symbol. Whenever you see a lion in FF8, you're like "oh, this thing is supposed to make me think of Squall."

Because Moombas were way too much of a 90's cat to survive into the 2000s

They can do it anyway and not have it be about Squall.

Moogles are different in each game too. Sometimes they are animals, someitmes party members, sometimes a race of intelligent creatures, and sometimes ugly minigame mascots.

No, I don't believe they can. I think in FF9, FF12, FF23, people are gonna see the Moomba and even if it's a librarian in a monocle, they're gonna go "oh look, it's that thing that represents Squall."

Their only hope is to wait for like FF90-something when people just don't even know anymore that there even was an FF8.

Id prefer it if they made them look more like how their in game models looked. Just with current graphics. I recall them being far more cutesy looking in game where as this always looked like some lame sonic rip off main character.

whats weird to me is that moombas evolve from weird man people and their alternative is an weirder man creature

Moombas did cameo here and there across the series at least. Nothing substantial, but they did show up.

As for why they didn't get a big role again, most likely just too tied in with FF8. Their lore was really specific to that game in that they were the final form of Shumi, and as mentioned earlier, they were kind of thematically tied in with Squall. SE in general still doesn't seem to love FF8, so it wouldn't surprise me if they just decided to stay away from anything that tied in with it.

FF8 was not very popular in Japan and has become fairly maligned over the years elsewhere too

Maybe they just didnt want people to think Moogles and Goombas had an unholy lovechild
