IMO, Spider-Man 2 kinda sucked overall. I loved the first game and Miles Morales but almost tapped out before finishing 2.

Marvels Spider-Man 2 was kind of disappointing. Insomniac played it way too safe and the game suffered as a result. Really hope the final game(s) knock it out of the park.

like, if you're going to make it harry instead of eddie, that would make it hit so much harder when venom starts spitefully going for peter's life. it should have been even more personal than venom already originally was, which was a lot

he should have gone for rio. he should have gone for FEAST. bit by bit he should have pushed and pushed until spider-man was at his physical limit and his wit's end

It was pretty bad.

The problem was that Harry doesnt become Venom until like the last couple hours of the game. He doesnt have time to actually do anything.

This is just my opinion, but I think Peter should have had the symbiote for the entire game, with him finally removing it during the grand finale. Then have Venom in 3 for the whole story and not just the final act

I wouldn't call it bad, but it was definitely inferior to the first two. Having both Peter and Miles provided some cool moments like the Peter boss fight but I think it stretched the story budget too much. Miles dealing with Mr. Negative just fell kind of flat because it didn't get enough development and as y'all were saying, we didn't get enough of the actual Venom.

Also Mysteriums aside, all of Miles' sidequests were just so fucking twee that the entire game feels like the happy man/sad man on the bus meme.

Attempting to do the venom origin is perpetually the victim of really needing to be the subject of two games/stories. One with black suit Peter, one with Venom.

when you try to cram the two into one thing he ends up showing up really late and feeling like an afterthought

Also the whole black suit arc happens way too fast. Peter has it for what, 2 days? He goes from 0-100 incredibly fast. For the symbiote story to really work it needs to be a slow burn; a gradual corruption. Peter cant be the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and then all of a sudden become the Punisher after having the suit for like a day

Dont get me wrong. Its still a good game and I still boot it up to just mindlessly swing around. The story was just a mess. And its a shame because the first 2 games had such tight narratives

I guess I'm in the minority, because I felt that SM2 was better than its predecessors (I really enjoyed them, too).

Kraven was a good antagonist, and I preferred him to Octavius, Mr. Negative, & Tinkerer, the side-content was more fun, and the set-pieces were great. the MJ sections were also better, but it would have been best if they weren't there at all, but I guess it was the diversify the experience.

I also liked the black suit and Venom build up.

yea, the whole game wasn't dedicated to it, but I felt it was used well.

the only part I didn't like was the infestation stuff at the end.

I kind of hated Kraven in this, he got away with holding the entire city hostage when he was just a rich dude because he was" THE MOST BAD ASS MAN EVER." At some point the hype got out of control since Kraven more or less even got to die on his terms.

One thing I did heavily dislike was Kraven offscreen killing a bunch of villains.

oh yea, one thing I dislike related to that *spoilers for both Miles Morales and SM2*

apparently, Kraven killed Rhino off-screen, but it already looked like Phin killed him in MM, so that piece felt ultimately meaningless.

Overall I thought the game was pretty good, it did feel like Act 3 was rushed though. And it might actually have been, or they made a severe rewrite mid-production, because Tony Todd said he recorded hours of lines, most of which never made it to the final game. It made people think they were saving it for a DLC or something, but we've had nothing since then.

Act 3 really should've been fleshed out a bit longer for sure.

Felt like Spider-Man 1 and MM set up a great groundwork for the series then Spider-Man 2 just decided to be the safest paint by numbers sequel ever. The game starts off super strong then peters out a few hours after it.

Doesn't help that Peter and Miles' stories are so disjointed. Miles is basically living some Saturday morning slice of life cartoon shit and Peter is going through the most traumatic events of his life. All while Miles is absolutely overleveling on Peter's ass smh. The funniest shit in the game is when Miles is like "man I wonder what Peter is doing, hope he's okay" after you helped some kid finish his science fair experiment then you switch to Peter and he's getting shit on in every which direction lol

MM is still my favorite of the bunch.

a proper venom storyline needs a ton of build up to land properly. You need black suit spider-man and Peters increasing dependence on it to last a while to establish the character and its toxicity, and THEN you can go wild with the usual vengeful venom.

Spider-man 2 failed on the build up. Peter just does not have the suit long enough for the player to feel its influence. Peter is an asshole for just a few missions and then the suit is already torn off of him before venom himself is shoehorned into the last third of the game.

If anything, I think focusing all of spider-man 2 on black suit spider-man and then ending it with a venom cliffhanger wouldve been way more effective.

Yes i fully agree with this. Cramming them both into one game undermines the black suit arc, but also makes venom feel like way less of a presence and threat when he does show up.

We literally spent more of the game on Kraven than venom

I agree, the game was not great. The gameplay was rather dull and boring. For the storyline, can they ever do a venom villain without having like 2-3 others crammed in? It's like they don't think venom would hold up a story on his own.

story was pretty run of the mil either way. typical Spiderman stuff. as for the gameplay itself, it's fun but it's not like it adds much compared to the previous Spiderman game. feels more like a Spiderman 1.5 actually... lol

I think it could have worked if Peter got the black suit right at the beginning of the game and then Harry got it back midway through. But they had to build up Harry, Kraven, Miles' stuff, Peter and MJ, and they tried to do it all in one game which didn't work

Venom isn't the issue though. Almost every adaptation we've had of him outside of the cartoons is so drastically different from the original story that it's basically a different character.

Like Topher fucking Grace is probably the most accurate depiction of Venom we've had outside of the comic book or cartoons and even then they basically turned him into "Peter Parker but evil" instead of being his near-polar opposite.
