It definitely looks like how I would picture the director of Napoleon Dynamite would make a Minecraft movie.

I don't get what they expected when JB announced he was Steve, did they think the audience would roar with applause at that classic, beloved character, Steve?

my main problem with the minecraft movie is that its release reasoning just feels thin conceptually and visually. having a movie at this point is just feels a tad out of touch. like minecraft hasn't really expanded out of the main videogame outside of maybe licenced books, plushies or general merch. it might not even have the rotational/retaining audience like Pokemon has. Story Mode was pre-Microsoft Aquisition, and post-aquisition, all Microsoft has to show for it is 2 failed games (Legends and Dungeons) and one game that never left Beta (Minecraft Earth. chasing the Pokemon GO trend).

there's also the general awareness/reception to minecraft as an IP overall, not just from general exposure, but also awareness of game content. like everyone is aware of Steve, and regular mobs like wolves, chickens, sheep, pigs and cats. it briefly goes out with skeletons and zombies. endermen is mildly a stand out element just because of their abilities. villagers? illagers? later content additions like Piglins, Blazes, Withers or Ghasts? Shulkers?

or even just biome monsters/animals? honestly, i think Minecraft is almost capped out its capacity for people who'll buy into getting the game itself. they've already shown attempts to rope in opposite players by (seemingly) be generous by offering a PC version of Minecraft (to java players) as well as Java versions for PC players...which is probably just a smokescreen to get people into the main branch ecosystem to shill microtransactions that they themselves can manage. (almost like a mini metaverse, microsoft probably gets a cut of all tings sold like)

even over the last few years they've started to grip over how their servers can be monetized from fair things (like no NFTs, no capes) to questionable stuff like preventing anything like server boosts, to the extreme (mostly to protect themselves) like disallowing people to use elements that'd breach a general child audience (like guns, realistic weaponry). they also placed heavy emphasis on disallowing Minecraft iconography in convention/livestream settings unless it's clear that they're not backed by microsoft. also jamming in the report system into the Java version of the game, where any behavior/TOS they doesn't like also gets you banned in the other.

heck, the Manga is coming out in 2025, presumably to benefit from the media blitz the movie might bring.

In a sense, it almost looks desperate that they've stuck Minecraft on gamepass. unless they have analytics that people with gamepass never played minecraft. they're probably hitting bedrock with mobile/switch users.

My two young sons were going crazy, laughing and having a great time with the trailer. Ill take them to go see it.

Not blocky enough

While I certainly never had an ounce of interest in a Minecraft movie, it's amazing just how astoundingly bad it looks. It's like they had a spare shitty Jumanji script lying around and just tossed a Minecraft theme over it.
