The fan engagement platform Fandom has acquired a number of entertainment and gaming brands from Red Ventures in a deal valued at about $55 million.

The acquired titles include TV Guide, Metacritic, GameSpot, Cord Cutters News, Comic Vine and Giant Bomb.

Just to illustrate, total visits for:
Metacritic: 13.2m
GameFAQs: 728.7k

History of GameFAQs:
  • 2003. CNET bought GameFAQs and two other websites for $2.2m
  • 2008. CBS bought CNET networks for $1.8b (yes, billion). This networks had, among others, CNET itself, ZDNet, GameSpot, TechRepublic, Metacritic, and GameFAQs
  • 2018. GameFAQs was put under GameSpot by CBS. gamefaqs.com redirects to gamefaqs.gamespot.com
  • 2020. Red Ventures bought CNET networks for $500m from ViacomCBS. Viacom merged with CBS in 2019.
  • 2022. Fandom bought parts of CNET networks (quoted above) for $55m. The main CNET is still with Red Ventures.

The true value in the site is the guides and walkthroughs, especially older games. Nobody cares about the userbase.

So I'd say, more than a mil I guess.

Say GameFAQs has a measly 1% total visitors, that still puts it at ~$550,000. I didn't think the deal was worth this much to be honest. GameFAQs or to be precise, GameSpot, was more expensive than we thought.

Also poor CBS...buy 1.8bil, sell 500mil

The knowledge in the guides are priceless though. Only if there was another website where people can reupload them.

And Cyrics guides make up approx $3.49 of that.

This site alone is likely almost worthless. I highly doubt it's making any money.

I'll buy it right now for $100,000 cash.

Probably overpricing it, but it's the only way to save the site from Fandom.

You can Google it. Iirc it's like $60k, which means it's not worth enough to draw up the paperwork to sell. You'd need to buy it as part of a bundle

According to a certain website:
Cord Cutters News = 0.0074%
GameFAQs = 0.0089%
Giant Bomb = 0.29%
TV Guide = 8.1%
Metacritic = 13.73%
GameSpot = 77.86%
That'd put GameFAQs at 0.0074% * 55mil = $4,000

The same website however, also puts GameSpot at 526mil, which we know is not true since the whole deal was worth 55mil. Don't think we can trust that website.

Neoseeker? Although we'll need to ask the original authors to reupload them since GameFAQs holds the rights to publish them.

I did this, you can see the result above. Imho that $60k prediction is way off. Also there's no way GameSpot alone is worth 500mil (according to that website). That's pretty much the worth of the whole CNET networks, based on RV & CBS deal in 2020.
