I've been thinking of going for a trade job because I'm getting sick of the service industry, but not sure what I want to do. I was thinking maybe auto mechanic or welding but I wanna look into others and see if there is any others in not thinking of that might be a good one to do.

Would any of you mind telling about your trade jobs?

I don't personally. I make the same currently as my friends that are electricians. I'm currently working as a network technician.

They're great for real opportunity to make money. They're great if you get into a union so you actually get protections. They are not great on your body. There are still frustrating elements with co-workers and clients like the service industry. Those are the impressions I get.

I'm not in the trades but work with those who are.

While it pays well, currently in my area there's a shortage of tradesmen and a huge excess of apprentices. ie not enough companies run apprenticeship programs to meet demands. Which makes it much harder to get into and has negative effects on the industry.

My understanding is that's the case across Canada. I'm not sure if the US is in a similar spot.

I've been thinking about going to trade school. I make decent money but I'm just in middle management and feel kinda worthless honestly. I think I'd feel better about myself doing something with my hands and might even make more money depending on the trade.

I think the ultimate goal with learning a trade should be to start your own company and work for yourself though

Nope. I don't stand around waiting to help a person pick out groceries. I worked a skilled trade ensuring the department is ready for people to shop in. Yes, I provide customer service as needed but it's not my principle focus.

Going by the technical definition which describes anything that isn't a college educated job as a trade job yeah... but nobody would call it that. You might as well call picking orders in a warehouse as a trade job lmao

I'm a deli clerk but I would not call that a trade job. I would call it masochism/living hell/public toilet trash can job. You don't have to learn or know any "trade" going into it, you learn it in a week or two. Managers have it just as easy and they delude themselves into thinking you have to be a chosen one to be one of them. If they're a narcissist then that means someone who reminds them of themselves the most.

My manager thinks I am not cut out to be manager myself, and that's fair, but if you ask me any random person could come in and do it, and I don't think she's particularly bright herself. Anyway, she generally only ever promotes teenage girls who have a mental breakdown over something small and walk out (20 out of 20 managers have all been women). Another 6 years will surely get me a promotion!

I made connections as a full stack software engineer at my startup who thought highly of me that will get me my foot in the door in an IT position soon. Not competent enough to stock a floor though, gotta get a teenage girl for that.

Being in management is more about being pleasant to work with than skilled.

Any dumbfuck can be a manager but if they're a pain in the boss's ass they won't keep the job.

In my experience, the toughest part about being a manager is that you're the one that's responsible for everything including shit that is out of your control many times. If you have a good team, it's easy, but if you have people who want to start drama or don't want to do their job it becomes kind of a nightmare trying to make sure you have a fair/mature environment for everyone.

A lot of people aren't cut out for management because they have the emotional intelligence of a teenager. But then again, I've seen managers get away with acting like toddlers as well

Because that's also being just a regular factory worker, which is explicitly not a trade job.

I'm not in Canada and it's a shame that so much produce in the US comes from Canada and yet working within the produce industry isn't considered a red seal trade considering without produce workers people don't eat.

I don't believe you at all. I can't give a minor a knife, they can't use the cardboard bailer or the trash compactor. Unless you're working for some small local market.

Especially given your comment as if the US hands out weapons to people which would never happen.
