I really hope that the writers simplify things for the next season of US politics. While not as outlandish and unbelievable as the previous two seasons, its become hard to follow with too many characters involved.

I know it's probably reductive, but the massive tariffs Trump is saying will increase revenue or replace lost revenue from lowering taxies can't possibly work, right?

-Impose or raise tariffs. Things from other countries cost more.
-This allows US companies to be more competitive in markets where they may have been priced out by imported goods (which can be a good thing!)
-Either way goods will cost more, but if we transition to purchasing those same good from domestic manufacturers then we would NO LONGER be importing those goods.
-Which would REDUCE the amount of tariffs being collected?

Obviously in industries that it's vitally important that we remain relevant as world leaders it can be an important tool. The average American consumer still "loses" in those industries, but it allows our country as a whole to stay technologically on pace with other countries.

But it just can't be possible to simultaneously say tariffs are going to bring back domestic manufacturing *AND* serve as an effective replacement for income taxation, right? I'm trying to view this in as broadly as possible and i'm sure this topic requires more nuance, but it's been gnawing at me.

The difference between the terminally online like us and the average populace seems to be out in full force. While the Oprah appearance last night seems like a drop in the bucket compared to all the GOP scandals yesterday, in reality ActBlue received $100 Million dollars between the start and end of the interview, and it's online viewership is already almost as high as her campaign launch.

This is compounded by the fact that US companies heavily import materials to run their own businesses. So the more you buy local, the more they have to import anyway. So the US double dips on taxes, once from the imports of materials, and then again from the increased taxes on sales of the local goods that were already made more expensive by the tariff.

Well the increase to Sales tax would only benefit the State the goods are being sold in, so that wouldn't help federal revenue even if it would ultimately affect how much consumers pay.

All of which increases % of the tax burden being shouldered by people who consume an amount of goods each year that represents a higher % of their income?

If this is meant to replace income tax as Trump seems to suggest then people who are earning millions of dollars a year are not likely purchasing an amount of goods that would be in line with how much more income they have than someone in the working or middle class.

I think for feds the main revenue is still primarily from indirect imports by local companies, which they just can't avoid because it's impossible to run the business otherwise. Those costs are passed down to the consumer. But I think the income tax revenue from those sales also grows proportional to the tariff revenue, it's just a smaller portion.

Also you must keep in mind that in all of history, tariffs have never balanced an economy, Republicans (let alone Trumpers) have no interest in balancing the economy, and Trump is only proposing this because he found it's an effective way to spin his billionaire tax cuts.

Trump's team is trying to bring back their efforts to get Nebraska to switch to winner-take-all for their electoral votes instead of it being by congressional district.

Notable in that previously Maine said they'd do the same thing if Nebraska pulled that shit to cancel them out... but because Maine's constitution states new laws take 80 days to take effect they would be unable to retaliate this cycle.

If, and it's a big if, Nebraska succeeded it would mean the "Blue Wall" of MI+WI+PA would no longer be enough for Harris. Right now that would get her to exactly 270. If Nebraska changes to WTA it would be 269 instead which would send it to the House and all but ensure a Trump win so Harris would need another swing state on top of those.

The efforts stalled out last time because some of the NE GOP didn't want to go forward with it and there's no reason to think that's changed... yet.

December 11th (82 days) is the deadline for states to resolve conflicts about their electors
December 17th (88 days) is when the EC votes.

January 6th was when Congress certifies that vote - the "plan" behind January 6 was:

a. Have the GOP refuse to certify the Electoral College vote. If they rejected enough states then no one would have 270 and the House would vote one-vote-per-state and elect Trump
aa. Reject certification of certain states like Georgia but "send it back to the states" and lean on the state GOP in those states to declare there was mass voter fraud or some shit and that "actually Trump won" and come back with Trump electors.

b. Run the clock out on the joint session and send us into a constitutional no-mans-land where no one was sure what the legal procedure for certifying the election was and Trump would basically use being president to institute martial law and crack down on any protests (as he discussed with the people he put in charge of DOJ after resignations from the top officials over the idea but thanks to SCOTUS apparently this can't be used as evidence against him because it's an official act somehow)

I'm surprised there aren't more states that split their EC votes in some way. Think of all the swing states the GOP has gerrymandered. Why not implement Nebraska/Maine style district votes to take advantage of that? Maybe even give the extra two remaining EC votes to whoever wins more districts rather than the state winner. Imagine how screwed the Democrats would be if WI/AZ/GA/NC already had most of their votes locked in for the GOP. It's like they're barely even trying to rig the election system.
