If I was talking about the average person, I'd probably agree. She is a politician, though. She is talking from a life experience that already doesn't apply to almost any voter, from a relationship with politics and policing in the US that does not apply to almost any voter, to a relationship with the GOP and her own party that does not apply to almost any voter. I don't think she has a luxury of positioning herself as the everyman, any more than George W. Bush had the position to assume a faux-everyman stance as the 'president you'd have a beer with' given his silver spoon upbringing. (And please don't misunderstand, I cite him only for the relevance of assumed personas not aligning with reality. I'm not implying any equality between those two people beyond that.)

I don't think we did, no. I believe her when she says she found the prevalence of those raised hands to be chilling. At the same time, I think her position might be that she personally want to go farther than that, but she can't without it being political suicide - as it was in 2019, when she supported measures that the GOP has willfully and maliciously portrayed as government gun confiscation. For all the flaws I find in her campaign and politics, learning from her past mistakes isn't one of them.

I am saying however that if we let the GOP poison the well on yet further firearm reform, as we have in the past, we won't get an assault weapon ban in the first place, let alone all the other crucial reforms required to stop those hands going up at all those college events which troubled her so deeply. And I believe her rhetoric does that, sacrifices that ground, in order to ensure that she is elected over Trump.

I went and looked it up again and it's actually just Hong Kong that allows that. Otherwise the only gun ownership in China is long guns for hunting + some weird cultural exceptions.

Hong Kong allows airsoft. They do not allow you to have guns.

This is irresponsible of Harris. It's well established that having a gun in the house makes it far more likely, not less, that someone in the household will be shot, and that a gun kept in someone's home where there's a break-in is much more likely to injure or kill a family member than the intruder. Harris is encouraging behaviour that makes you and your family less safe.

This by Harris is an unfortunate necessity.

She would be guaranteed to lose the election if she answered with the statistics of how having a gun in the home makes people less safe.

You say this as if the Secret Service doesn't exist.

That doesn't help if, in confusion or panic during a break-in, the gun owner accidentally shoots a family member, or if the intruder takes the gun and turns it on them, both of which are more common than the gun being used to shoot the intruder.

You'd have to be a idiot to shoot in the dark and generally speaking if someone breaks into a house that's currently obviously got people in it it's a safe assumption they got a weapon already. Otherwise they'd wait for the house to be empty.

Personally why I always leave some lights on. To give the impression someone is both home and awake

It seems very left on issues of sexuality and gender identity, which is obviously good.

But can veer sharply right on issues of law and order. The pro-capital punishment, pro-prison 'justice', opposition to protest, stances you see are ones I would more expect from traditional conservatives.

Not sure why Oprah sounded shocked that the VP and former prosecutor owns a gun.

She's against assault weapons which makes sense since no civilian needs to own those, but Trump's still going to spin it where she wants to take away all guns.

It's also not a crazy answer.

Someone breaking into your home in the middle of the night, it is not a reasonable request to demand the victim to wish upon a star that the burglar isnt there to harm you or your family, or to ridiculously assume the victim(s) can just, run away.

Her answer also shuts down this false notion that the left hates guns and wants them all banned just because a minority of the left does. Sensible gun laws =/= anti gun, and yet you have some who are characterizing her words as "right leaning."

SYG is an expansion of thought based on the original castle doctrine.

Most castle doctrine has language that implies a need for fear of bodily harm or death, the reality of that it's a bit of a blank check to execute someone on your personal property.

SYG expands that to anywhere in public you could feel threatened in a similar manner. And, in a similar manner, it's a blank check to execute people you can claim are threatening you.

One comes from the other, and I don't know how you can completely separate them.

And that's before we get into systemic issues like how a black person using either SYG or castle laws would be treated, even if they were in the right, should they exercise that right. (Or how quickly a white person exercising that wrongly would be let off if they defended their castle against someone with the right shade of skin.)

I never said they're the same or conflated them in what I think is an unfair way.

I mean, imagine if Sonya Massey had defended her apartment instead of calling the cops to report someone on her property. I don't see a non-racist outcome from that encounter, either?
