Yes he also thinks the Ancient Greeks and Romans, and other ancient people, were all Nordic fair blue eyed, blond hair people before being replaced via mass migration and Christianity. Im just telling you that most burzum fans, especially the young ones just getting into black metal, arent necessarily nazis themselves but think the music is cool and/or edgy and the extracurriculars authenticate it. Specifically the church burning and murder, not so much the nazi shit.

we can only hope it isnt a gateway for extremist right wing philosophy for them, especially for the teenagers.

Varg sucks, everything Mayhem put out sucks, and 90% of Burzums work sucks.

Filosofem admittedly kinda slaps, which is why Id pirate it (if it was legal because like a loyal Fandom supporter I respect the law).

anyone who spends any time in any extreme metal community online knows it absolutely is a gateway. Im not going to write off an entire genre, especially one I enjoy, but the community is beyond toxic.

This is a gross exaggeration imo

there are some problematic subcultures just like in all genres of music but by and large the metal community is accepting and anti-hate, and there is a lot of explicitly left wing metal out there

anyway I agree with the notion that if youre wearing a Burzum shirt you know and are ok with what youre supporting. Theres no plausible deniability

Also, I want to add that it's insane the kind of shit Twitter allows. Going down the Varg rabbit hole I found accounts putting out tweets like saying black people make good slaves or that women shouldn't be educated with millions of views.

From what little I know, that just sounds like some rumor milling. They were both trying to live their "hell on Earth" fantasy. There was claims Euronymous was trying to tie him up and kill him. When Oystein found out Per Ohlin shot himself he took multiple pictures and made a necklace from some fragments he found. It's probably more likely Varg just wanted to be the bigger boogeyman and the leader of the "Black Metal Inner Circle" and not Oystein.

I've been familiar with the American death/black metal scene since the early 90s, and I find that the genre is uniquely suited to fans sliding into some really problematic ideas.

The isolationist Nordic themes and aesthetics become easily Nazi-adjacent because the Nazis adopted many of the same symbology for their own use. I still know a few guys from back then , and I watched them slide in and out of really shitty ideas. A lot of black metal fans (from back then, anyway), as they "matured" and wanted to get into more mellow and "thoughtful" music would find themselves getting into groups like Death In June, which... well.

All that said, younger generations of fans do seem to tend to be less toxic, and I see a fair amount of them talk about and speak against the problematic shit of the past, which I'm happy about. It's definitely become a healthier scene than it used to be.

I've never been too familiar with them, but as I understand it some of the more fascist-minded themes fell by the wayside with the departure of certain members. But again, I don't know much about it.

But yeah, I really like a lot of the music specifically when it comes to neo-folk type stuff, but it always comes with the game of dodging shitty, sneaky themes in lyrics. Especially with Scandinavian prog-metal, I always feel like I have to do a little research. There's a troublingly fine line between songs about Norse mythology, occultism, etc. and insidious intent.

I used to not care about the musician's beliefs, 'only teh riffs' but that shit all became unacceptable when I truly grew up (Donnie making Nazism mainstream also helped). I've long since purged my metal collection of everyone that has been outed as a Nazi or Nazi-adjacent and honestly don't miss any of that shit. I'm not sure about Drudkh but I suspect the dude holds shitty beliefs, albeit not the length of dumbass Varg. It's really unfortunate to listen to seemingly innocent stuff and realize it rarely is.
