It seems like whenever someone mentions tagging it's in a negative context. "I've got them tagged as [something shitty]".

Curious what the motivation behind tagging is for the most part.

Don't use it !

Don't assist data point pushers in profiling others AND ....SIMULTANEOUSLY, YOURSELF.
The more you use it the more valuable to cookie with your name on it becomes....

I mainly tag trolls and MAGA/right wingers, but sometimes I tag people for recognition purposes.

I don't tag many people. Mostly users who I can see are arguing in bad faith as a reminder that they're not worth engaging with.

Almost exclusively to help me remember who bigots or otherwise horrible people are, but there are some rare occasions where I simply tag someone as something incase there's a certain detail I want to remember about them that I otherwise wouldn't.

I mainly know usernames of people who post about the same thing a lot.

I think avatars beside posts would help with recognition. On some other boards I know people by their avatar more than their name. It's like that irl too with faces.

This. I recognize a few of the bigger posters around here but just don't really care about personal engagement for the most part. And I don't ever get into arguments with people and generally avoid controversial or big discussions so I have no reason to tag people for having bad opinions. And if they do I don't really care anyway.

I tag people so that I can remember them. Like if someone says something that makes me think that maybe they're a bigot. I'll tag them as "bigot?" And then remove that question mark if I keep seeing posts like that from them. Or I'll mark someone as "troll" if I see them trolling a lot

I don't typically mention it to them like "oh I have you tagged." It's just for my own benefit, so that I know not to waste my time engaging with them.

But not all of my tags are negative. Some are more joking like I have a certain user tagged as "hates Monster, the anime" it's not something I hold against them, but I chuckle when I see them in an anime topic.

Same, I don't use it. I didn't even know it was a feature until I came to CE. People here have this need to constantly announce that they're tagging someone or what they have someone tagged as.

This helps to distract you from CE losing users and it being the same small group of 100-200 people posting if you don't tag.
