In the late 60s/early 70s, the UK expelled about 2,000 inhabitants of the islands for the construction and supposed security of what became a significant air and naval base at Diego Garcia, and Mauritius has been advocating for the return of the Chagos islands to them since about the 1980s.

The UK apparently agreed today to finally return sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius, with the caveat that the joint air base would remain in US/UK hands, pending treaty approval by both nations.

In depth article on the secrecy and weirdness on that Island.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ckdg7jjlx2go

The British can do fuck all without US permission, and that suits both of them just fine.

Yeah, Diego Garcia has an extremely sorted and complex history, but coupled with it borderline being the ideal staging ground for anything in the Indian Ocean (militarily or covert), not too surprising that the deal was contingent on us retaining it.

And meanwhile, the only reason I really know anything about it was from a deep dive reading into it years ago after a throwaway line in Halo 2.

This is the last remnant of the British Empire iirc. Unless you count Ireland.

Brits still have quite a few possessions in the Atlantic plus Gibraltar and on Cyprus, and Pitcairn in the Pacific.

Small point I initially missed from the BBC article.

Then Brexit left many European nations reluctant to continue backing the UKs stance in international forums.

Those Brexit morons wanting a return to their glory days shrank their empire because the rest of Europe wasnt willing to put up with their shit on a decolonization dispute anymore.
