Her point is that if you want to not support chickfila due to their donations to homophobic organizations, then that's fine. The problem comes from looking down on others for not following your example when you too certainly support businesses that have done or do bad things as well.
Unless a business I've been to is blatantly homophobic then it's not the same.

It's not hard to not to give money to a homophobic business.

There is no ethical consumption under capitalism.

You're not somehow sinless if you go to McDonald's instead, as an example, because they happily make sure their workers suffer to the point they just straight up tell their workers how to get food stamps because they know they're fucking evil and no one's going to do shit about their poverty wages.

This also ignores other complexities of the issue, e.g. is it homophobic to work at CFA, knowing you might not get a job elsewhere? Plenty of queer friends of mine have worked there in the past.

To be clear, I'm not saying "eating at CFA is a good thing, actually" - but rather, there is no real moral high ground with this kind of junk. All you do is pick a different sin to support. I won't give people shit for boycotting them of course, but I'll simply admit that I'm a slave to my baser instincts and, as no good alternative short of a home-cooked meal exists (and even that is another rabbit hole to go down), admit that if I'm going to get food with blood on my hands I'll at least eat food that's tasty.

If you think there's no ethical consumption and that bothers you, why not try to fight it? One person can't fight every battle, but we don't have to. It doesn't take everyone to pressure a corporation, just enough people.
This is why we got unions and why corporate politics is pushing back so hard against these in the past few decades.

If we tell you Cick Fila is unethical and you reply "McDonald's is also unethical" this shouldn't make you feel like its given you an excuse to eat Chick Fila, you should be protesting McDonalds. Making capitalism more ethical is a process, don't give up because there's no magic want to wave to make it all go away at once. Frankly, you're right about McDonalds employees being underpaid, I'd support you enthusiastically if you were fighting that rather than fighting people trying to force Chick Fila to shape up.

Besides, eating out at fast food places is hardly an essential habit you can't curtail to make a point.

Your point is entirely valid and I don't really have a good reply.

I guess maybe part of it is just that I don't feel empowered enough to where people would care about my objections - or the broader queer community at large - when it comes to where they donate. Hell, is it even really a queer issue or so much just that the system is too pervasive and greedy that we're beyond the point in really instilling change?

I guess that's just me falling to doomerisms though.

You've given me something to think about. Thanks.

Though to be clear on one thing:

I'd support you enthusiastically if you were fighting that rather than fighting people trying to force Chick Fila to shape up.

I'm not fighting people trying to force CFA to shape up, or at least am not trying to. I want them to shape up. I was moreso just objecting to the implication made that going there makes you homophobic.

Yeah, I don't think people eating at Chick-fil-A are homophobic for going there, but I personally don't go to Chick-fil-A because the company is homophobic.

I understand your concern, but I'd actually say thanks to social media, blogs, online video sharing, the average person is in a better place to have their message spread an influence others than at possibly any time in our history, for both good and ill. Some random could end up with 100k likes on Twitter and everyone is reading it. Of course Twitter itself has gone in a weird direction, but there are still people insulting Musk there. Alone, we can be beaten, but in numbers he can't ban everyone quickly enough for insulting his fragile ego.

The system really is going to be difficult to change, but at one point in the industrial revolution small children were literally dying in coal mines, and despite being under assault, we still have child labor laws today thar prevent that. It's worth gathering in numbers because it still matters.

Finally, yes I dont think you're homophobic for going there, but I would suggest you could do better; in the end, i can't force you to do what I prefer, nor would I. In my case, this is just me mind, but I consider the fact that lgbt+ people's basic civil rights like access to medicine and more are under assault this election cycle makes me extra averse to supporting them, even more so than when I just boycotting them due to distaste for their beliefs.

The difference is that many of us don't have a choice about whether or not we need to get gas thanks to how car-centric our infrastructure was designed to be, whereas we have many more choices available when it comes to what we want to eat and where we can get it.

I find this discussion interesting, because every time you make any sort of consumption choice, you're supporting *something* shitty. The Good Place did a pretty good job of showing how, if we were to give people points based on our individual actions, the world is so damn complicated that you're making a whole ton of implicit choices when you think you're making a single choice.

For example, if you get your food at a McDonald's that's further from you instead of a Chick-Fil-A that's closer, you're emitting more CO2 into the environment. Is the extra CO2 emission a fair price to pay for not giving your money to the Cathy family? It depends on how you look at it. And hypothetically, if that Chick-Fil-A were to close down because of a boycott, and instead the land gets bought by some shitty private equity firm instead, have we really made a positive difference? (Let's not forget that PE firms are the worst businesses in the country and do damage on a magnitude of order that is unheard of compared to Chick-Fil-A) I don't know. I'm not out to judge anyone. I just find it to be an interesting thought exercise.

you're right about McDonalds employees being underpaid

I guess this is regional as most of them in my city are starting people off at $15/hr now or close to it, which is quite high where I live (which shouldn't be the case, however my city is also known for shittily low wages).

They had the reputation for most underpaid workers for the longest time, however because of COVID (I think) now they're one of the better paying fast food places.

But there's also no uniform standard due to being a franchise, I think I've seen it range from 12-15 at various locations here.

Problem is many of the choices we think we have aren't always choices. For example, most Americans don't have a real choice for transportation aside from driving private vehicles, the alternatives simply don't exist. Most Americans would prefer to reduce climate change, but don't have any say in transportation which is one of the biggest contributors. Energy is another one, but people have even less say in where their power comes from. The people that say they drive electrical vehicles instead of using Saudi oil may still be using that oil to generate the power for their vehicle.

When it comes to CFA, you don't take any more or fewer actions to eat somewhere else. The only meaningful difference is which business gets your money.
