I miss when developers would put bullshit in the second level so you had no choice but to go and buy the game if you ever wanted to actually beat it because you'd never beat it if you rented it.

souls games get really hard when u do challenge runs. i like to do no upgrade runs, lvl1 runs, shieldless runs, runs with only one attack etc

A lot of the difficulty in old games just comes from being sent back a bunch after you die or game over. So you can easily simulate that by just deleting your save file and starting over whenever that happens.

Which is also why the first Dark Souls is considered hard

A lot of that was just from lack of memory. Once systems could handle saving your game, it became the norm.

Play Fortnite on build mode and win 1st place that's harder than most old games it's even more difficult than Elden Ring.

That was about sending you back after you turned the system off. Sending you back after you died or got game over was more due to lengthening how long the game took you, especially once they started trying to fight game rentals. Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 were semi-reasonable in that you had unlimited continues, so at worst you got sent back to the start of an act. Ninja Gaiden 3 (at least in North America) had limited continues and no way to get more, so once you ran out of those you were back at the start of the game.

You want difficult? Give Tevi or Rabi Ribi a try. That'll put some hair on your chest.

Gonna have to disagree, the enemies are also a lot quicker and have more complex attacks. Going back to older souls games after elden ring is like going back to middle school after college... especially demon souls, many of those bosses are just simple gimmick bosses

also not sure why I said Dark Souls, I meant Demon's Souls is the one I haven't played. I 100%'d Dark Souls like 3 times cuz of the rereleases

True, but you just went back because once you turned your system off, your progress was lost. Once you could save your game, you started to see longer play, with a larger focus on narrative. That happens to be my preference, so I'm fine with it. There's probably plenty of difficult indie games. There's also a handful games with a permadeath mode.

Theres a difference between difficulty and punishment. What TC wants is punishment. Most people dont find punishment fun.

Not really theres a campfire around every corner once you get past the TD.. even then its reasonably spaced out.

Ds1 and souls gamepve is not hard once you notice patterns and the enviroment in boss areas. The only difficult part for me was the city archers. They hit like semi trucks and its a gauntlet. Take it bit by bit and its fairly simple. Each run it got easier

Caves of Qud 1.0 just came out after like 15 years of development. Highly recommend. It's basically nethack++

No one is impressed by you being able to beat hard games.

There are some challenging indie games being made. AAA hard games won't be a thing for obvious reasons (people who want hard games are a niche), but the Souls games get close with some pretty high end AA games that have a decent difficulty if you go for the challenging achievements (soul level 1, no deaths, etc.).
