Can you recommend me some American films made in the last five years (2019-2024) that isn't The Lighthouse?

>taking American Cinema course
>last paper is one film from pre-1959, one from 1960-1980, one from last five years
>professor didn't put this info up until second to last course module

I already watched the aforementioned flick for a paper on Willem Dafoe and am fairly confident in my ability to pick out films from the other two categories, but haven't really kept up with recent cinema.

Literally anything as long as it's American and within that five year range, I'm v. open-minded when it comes to media, willing to try anything at least once. I guess horror is probably the least likely for me to bite, don't really dig the genre post-80s, I do like creature features and Twilight Zone though.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check the site out. Zone of Interest might be relevant, also taking a history course on genocide.

Why the giant gap from 1980 to 2019?
I'm speculating here but based on observations from last two semesters at this uni
>studies have been moving to "online" and distance learning
>in my time there, we've gone through two learning platform revisions and there was evidence of a previous platform during first semester
>literally NONE of the professors know how to update their links to new stuff
So my guess is this course is an evergreen one that's probably been running since the 90s or 00s, professor just doesn't update the last chunk of years for whatever reason. I.e. in 1999, last five years would have been 94-99, 2010 would be 05-10 etc. Basically would have been relevant to the earlier years but now results in a decades long gap.
Anyway recs can be anything you enjoyed within that five year gap, I'm not picky.

Funnily enough I asked the microsoft AI site for 20 recs, it really wanted me to watch The Invisible Man; I think 12 through 20 was just that repeated. Us looks pretty cool, I like Peele.

Ill add The Shining and Pet Sematary (not the remake, but the book is infinitely better than the movies).

The Shining has several deep themes in the story.

Also Parasite.

It seems that it would be helpful to choose 3 films with clear comparisons or contrasts, and not just willy nilly pick a newer film

But Everything Everywhere could potentially be a good choice, because of how much it resonated with Gen Z and young Millenials, and it has an almost ADHD type of filmmaking that we are seeing more of today, but a critically acclaimed example of it.

Also, the 1960 break makes zero sense. A break that makes sense is 1967 when the Golden Age of Hollywood shifted to New Hollywood.

I strongly recommend taking a film from the 1950s that showcases the studio system, and one from the early or mid 70s during the height of the New Hollywood directors (Scorsese, Coppola, Altman, Kubrick, etc)

bsp77 posted... Basically I think the paper is meant to be a total reflection on the course; genres, studio system/New Hollywood/independent, starring actors and director's visions; similarities and differences in narratives, how the films reflect the time period they were constructed in, all that kinda stuff.

The main problem is, of course, I don't really watch newer films; only reason I picked The Lighthouse for the previous paper is cuz it was black and white, lol. I've got a rough idea in mind of the pre-59 film, so-so on the 60-80* one, but nooooo idea of what's been going on with cinema from 2019 on.

*Cut off is actually 1989 on this one

It was fairly mixed, but already considered a masterpiece from many outlets and viewers within less than a year. He also said verbatim that everyone hated The Godfather when it came out despite having near-unanimous critical acclaim, was a box office hit, and won Oscars.

Dude has lost it.

General media consumption habit: having been burned by ongoing manga and cancelled TV series in my youth, in the last four years or so my focus has been on complete/finished stuff, which tends to be older. My usual joke is I only read books by dead people. This kinda extended to film since it's easier to follow the filmography of actors and directors from decades ago, rather than trying to keep current with or wait for new projects. Ease of access isn't so much an issue nowadays but certainly laid the foundation years ago, as well--PBS Classic Movie Night and Svengoolie were two of my old Saturday evening haunts.

After a quick glance at the Wikipedia, this is definitely a contender.

Also chanced upon Heretic thanks to Hayame's suggestion of A24 films earlier--it literally couldn't get more recent than that, November 8 release date.
