I'm honestly fully expecting Fox to make the Simpsons the first all-AI main cast after eventually giving the VAs one last payday for perpetual voice rights.

Very well earned! I wonder if theyre going to recast or retire her characters. I imagine theyve got to at least recast Milhouse.

This feels like it's getting close to the end of the show as the VAs age out. Marge sounds like she should have retired a decade ago and idk how you continue the show at a certain point. Sound alike only work so well

Yeah once any of the main five retire, Ill probably stop watching. I absolutely will not watch an AI-voiced version of the show.

I've caught some bits of current-day Simpsons here or there, and virtually none of the voice cast is recognizable anymore. I have no problem with the Simpsons limping on long after we're all dead, but the time has long passed to let those poor souls retire their pipes and hire some convincing impersonators (Julie Kavner in particular).

It's still baffling to me that they didn't just recast Apu like they did Carl, Hibbert, Lou, etc.

I wouldn't care one bit if he sounds different if it means the character returns to the show.

Ahh, that sucks but it was quite a run. Going through the series now. Been missing the last couple of years (aside from Treehouse of Horror)

They should really take this as an opportunity to prepare to wrap up the series and have one or two more fanservice filled seasons to send it off on a good note, but they'll probably just continue to run it into the ground as the talent gets to old for it.

I fully expect this show to be voiced by AIs as they keep losing voice actors.

They're going to eventually do a soft reboot in-series where they introduce an entirely new cast of much younger people playing the roles(and maybe change some character dynamics around a bit for modern audiences) so the show can run another 35 years.

Theres too much money on the table for them to do anything else

That or they just use AIs

I feel like a lot of people will disagree but I think if they're going to keep the show going they shouldn't even try to get soundalikes. Get new voice actors to do their own interpretations of the characters. Nobody's going to do Dan Castellaneta's Homer as well as Dan Castellaneta but a new VA could do a version of Homer that's different but funny in its own way.

I say this partially because I don't want to see another actress destroy her voice the way Julie Kavner seemingly has from doing the Marge voice for so many years.

I think they'll rather end the show then replace and of the big voice actors - Milhouse's VA retiring probably means he's gonna be significantly less used.

Though I would also imagine its something like how the guy who made SpongeBob didn't want SpongeBob to be a kid in school and all these other things, then the second he died they made a bunch of spin offs specifically focusing on the stuff the guy didn't want.

Even if regular Simpsons ends at idk season 40, we'll immediately get 9 random spinoffs where Bart becomes a lawyer, Maggie in high school, and Lisa travelling from college to college as she gains international experience towards becoming president. And maybe that one about Chief Wiggum and Skinner opening a PI agency in New Orleans.

Simpsons is in a wiedd spot for me as I was too young to enjoy it by the time I was around the age to enjoy it and there was already such a huge backlog that I never really hopped on it

Yet I know a lot of the major characters simply because of their iconography snd a few episodes and scenes i caught here and there

Whatever it has become, classic Simpsons is a GOAT TV show.

Not even just a "Great Comedy show" i mean of any show ever made. It's in the running for the top spot.

At least if you don't view it as a whole and just measure it's peak.

I've generally felt like once one of the family VAs (remember that Castellaneta also voices an absurd number of characters), Azaria or Shearer retires, that's probably going to be it.

The Simpsons is so old now that someone who was born after it started airing is almost old enough to run for president.

They usually retire characters out of respect for voice actors who die; not sure if theyd do the same with a choice to retire. Might also depend how she herself feels about it.

Wasn't Apu only cut because a bunch of Karens whined "racism!" ?

35 years "and so many more" seems to imply in this day and age that they'll keep using her voice with the help of AI or something.

Yeah, he was cut due to controversy about the character himself (whereas the others were fine as characters, it was just the "should voice actors match the character's race?" thing so a replacement voice actor was all that was needed).

It was also because he was being portrayed as a stereotype based on his race and not his profession like other Simpsons characters.

I do miss Apu as a character, but a lot of the jokes around him were "he's Indian"
