Silver's been good, but I couldn't get some of my faves until it's too late to enjoy 'em, so now I'm gonna do Emerald again with a couple low-level faves hacked in. Four would be incorrigible; two is fun just as Prof Oak intended. I thought about adding in Vaporeon instead of 'King, but it looks like you can trade baubles for elemental stones this gen, so there may not be any need.

Haven't played in ten years, so let's see if this is one of the good ones or it's the crappy gen where 90% of the world is water.

There are two kinds of people in this world: those that see Hoenn as the most geographically-diverse region in the series (at least as of Gen 6), and those who can't see past the late-game water routes.

On my old file, I was around LV42 with most of my team (Wailord, Mightyena, Aggron, Ludicolo, and a couple others) and I know you catch Wailord at some port/beach area. I also saw I had a Sharpedo, so I must've gotten pretty far in the game. Not sure if I ever beat it -- maybe the average level gives that away -- but I remember a lot of water-related stuff (diving, exploring underwater caves, etc.) that was kind of a bummer. Maybe it won't be as bad as I recall, haha.

Richie Rich throwing his weight around I see. It was "funny" in a sense, because it made me use my last remaining Bite, and then I walked right into a battle of attrition against a Shroomish after that, having only a Torchic who didn't have any fire moves (and then learned Ember right after that fight).

He says low leveled faves hacked in. Which can be pretty fun.

Not sure if I ever played all the way through Pearl, but I hacked in FIVE of my favorites (well, more like four + Jolteon) from the get-go and abandoned the file by the second gym, lol. Two faves is in the Goldilocks zone. After all, Slowking still doesn't know any water/psychic moves and Tyranitar can't learn a rock move until LV22, plus has his stupid Sand Stream ability slowing every battle down until then. Why, I'm practically the victim here!

Anyway, I did some stuff at the first gym and am off to Slateport. I was hoping this old coot would give me Surf, but maybe that doesn't make sense this early in the game.

Yeah, I was gonna say that hacking in fully-evolved 'mons at start-game levels could be a double-edged sword due to movepools, especially stone evos or any others that get severely restricted pools after evolving.

I could always use TMs, but if I have to suffer with my 'Tar, I will. I think I'm near the cave I can get Aggron's littlest form at, though, so it wouldn't have been that big a deal to have gone for that instead. Not that I remembered the order of much in this game. Definitely didn't remember your dad was a gym leader AND you then skipped that gym immediately after finding it.

But anyway, my Slowking can murder in peace now that he has Water Gun and (the utterly disgusting) Yawn.

The amount of time it took to design Gulpin is the same amount used to cook Hot Pockets.

Got everyone up to LV20 at least, but I need to round out my team with a grass and/or electric 'mon.

For grass, I was thinking about going the Ludicolo route again, maybe because it has an easy-to-get nature that absorbs an entire element. Pretty sure it was water; self-healing is always good and I think it combos with Rain Dance or something. Other than that, maybe Breloom (mostly because of free on-contact status afflictions) or Vileplume? I don't know how to do hidden abilities for Vileplume -- I think it was something about "there's a bunch of X in Y zone" on the radio? -- but there aren't a ton of options I love here. Cacturne could be fun, but I don't want too many dark hybrid types.

For electric...uh, I'm drawing blanks here. Electrike and Plusle types look stupid and probably are stupid, so they're out. Maybe Lanturn, Voltorb or Pikachu line? I do like Magnezone's typing, though it doesn't really get me excited. Some of the limitations might be related to elemental stones. Hmm...

I also need a good flyer. I've used Tropius in the DS games, but I don't remember it being an exceptional fighter, really. Skarmory is one of my all-time faves, but I'm okay with mixing things up (even more so if some other 'mon has steel typing first). Maybe a dragon?

Might've overlooked something since I was only going off this:
https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Pok%C3%A9mon_by_Hoenn_Pok%C3%A9dex_number_in_Generation_VI

If I can't find a flyer I like, I might have to go back a generation.

Welp, kicked Flannery's ass, then my dad's. Slowking got way too much usage against Team Magma and Flannery's minions, so it ended up about 10 levels above everything else. Tyranitar got a little workout against Norman, though, so it's slowly catching up. Combusken is kinda weak and I'm not a huge fan, honestly...but I needed fire...

Now that I've got Surf potential (Tyranitar can actually learn this; I'm guessing it's more about "ride on Godzilla's shoulders" than actual flotation), I'll have to figure out where to go next. Maybe a maritime route near that the museum town. I still don't have a good electric type, so maybe I'll do that tomorrow. Might be able to avoid sea battles until then

Ugh, this game has gotten rather boring. I did Mt. Pyre and Mt. Chimney, then the Aqua Hideout, then got to Mossdeep or something...and none of it's very interesting. Even "Team Rocket hijacked Silph Co." has better writing. I mean, how do random gangsters steal a submarine anyway? Did they leave the keys in the ignition? Why is everything and everyone so stupid?

Maybe I'll start a new level on Pearl, lmao.

Well, what is your team right now, and who do you plan to keep in the party? Cause if nothing else, you could just teach someone Thunderbolt.

I got a Gloom and Magneton (who I taught Thunder from a department store), but I'm not really feeling either that much. I should've read Bulbapedia harder since Vileplum's kickass hidden ability isn't available this gen, I guess, and Magneton's whole purpose was having Levitate, which it doesn't get yet.

Slowking wound up being the MVP and got to the mid-40s, on the strength of wrecking all Team Magma lineups and generally doing fine through neutral ones, too. Tyranitar's defense is okay, but part of the reason I wanted him (besides nostalgia) was 'cause I thought he'd be good against thunder types. I have distinct memories of my Tyranitar having fun with Earthquake and stuff, but Tyranitar is Rock, so thunder stuff still gets through. I knew I should've went with Steelix!

Part of the problem with Emerald is that I just don't like 90% of the new creatures. I want the fun of Gen 1-2 with a kickass Gen 1-2 lineup, not something diluted with Gulpin, Wingull and other jank.

By the way, just to show how ovepowered (and boring) my first Pearl lineup was, here it is:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/b/b44aa054.jpg

I do like all these, but it was just too many at once, not to mention a few new nicknames that just seem stupid (except Charsbaugh, which I should use for the future).
