We use it as an excuse to have family gatherings and decorate. It's an entirely secular event with the exception of the inevitable religious lyric in some of the classic songs. I'm atheist and anti-capitalist, so no. My family does celebrate the commercial version, with a few elders actually believing in Jesus, but as far as I'm involved it's just a family gathering with some gift giving. I don't partake in the exchange of gifts, but I do like spending time with family. Unfortunately, we kind of stopped a couple of years ago after the matriarch, my maternal grandmother, died. I also haven't done anything with my father's side of the family for over a decade. --- I'm French speaking. 34/Male/Quebec ... Copied to Clipboard!

Zareth posted... If you spend more money in November and December than the rest of the year, congratulations, you celebrate Christmas. What if you're just taking advantage of deals for your own personal benefit? I almost never buy games at full price. For a thousand dollars, I can get a hundred retail games that would normally cost $60 each on average. I spend more money in late December than any other time of the year for that reason alone. If Christmas were to disappear, I would actually be satisfied. It's a shitty holiday. It has the highest number of suicides, it causes a lot of debt, it creates spoiled children, it puts stress on parents, and it gives people a cult-like mentally. If you don't understand the last one, just watch people's reaction after saying that you don't or won't celebrate it with your children. Most will judge you by calling you a bad parent for not lying to your children about Santa Claus and not spoiling your children with presents. Your children will also be bullied or pitied for having "bad" parents. If that's not a cult, I don't know what is. --- I'm French speaking. 34/Male/Quebec ... Copied to Clipboard!

Christian, so I observe it. Will definitely try to get to Christmas Eve service, though live stream is available if I can't.
