Suspect basically stood in the bushes in front of a hotel where their investor conference was going to take place, waited for the CEO, popped him, and got away. They haven't found him.

"Apparently" targeted because the suspect just waited while lots of pedestrians walked by like usual and he didn't engage with any of them.

Guy's gun was silenced, it jammed while he was shooting, he fixed it, and kept shooting. Dude knew what he was going.

That's dark.
Also 100% on this idea. Investors killing CEOs for short term gains lol. Just seems like the final level capitalism right there.

Now when a company is failing, don't lay off workers. Just kill the CEO.

It's more likely some disgruntled dude whose wife died after United Healthcare denied their claims.

Medical insurance should not be for-profit. Actually I'll go a step further and say healthcare in general shouldn't be for-profit. People like this CEO getting wealthy off of other people's suffering... I'm surprised we haven't seen more of this honestly

We're in end-stage capitalism/Gilded Age 2: Electric Boogaloo, so I wouldn't be surprised if we started seeing more of this. Assassinations and kidnappings of robber barons weren't uncommon right before of the Great Depression.

Other possibility would be a corporate hit, but that seems less likely.

It should say something that no one feels sympathy for this guy. We really did just miss the chance to eat the rich, and instead are going warp speed into oligarchy.

There's a base level of resentment for all major CEOs that they're hoarding their wealth instead of spending it on better causes than watching a number go up, but for a health insurance CEO in particular, every single dollar this guy received in compensation is a dollar of coverage that somebody was denied. There's a very real, measurable cost in human lives that can be tied to every multi-million dollar bonus this guy received, and it's not particularly surprising that nobody's feeling too bad about the death of the guy at the top of a giant pile of blood money.

Thompson had threats on his life. Another reason to start working from home. why didnt he gtfo or hire security?

It'd surprise me if he hasn't had threats on his life for his entire career. He was in charge of the insurance company with one of the highest claim denial rates in the country. You don't spend your career sentencing people to death so you can buy a new yacht without making plenty of enemies, but most of those enemies' threats don't actually amount to anything. This one just happened to.

Yellow posted...

He apparently ditched the bike (which was a rental) in Central Park and continued on foot, so unless he used an identifiable credit card to rent it or was clearly caught on camera, his chance of escape is actually pretty high. You can cover a remarkable amount of ground on foot in Manhattan, and pretty quickly get into areas that are dense enough that simply knowing that you went into them is largely useless for figuring out where you went.

It won't surprise me if he is caught, just because some very big money has a personal stake in making sure that happens, but it also won't surprise me if he successfully escaped.

The security thing is bizarre but he was speaking at an investor conference, which is basically the only group of people aside from the board that the CEO actually cares about. He had to turn up for it.

32% claim denial rate, national average is 16%. Doctors hate United Health due to the suffering and death they cause.

Health insurance is a massive scam, and Americans seriously need to wake up and demand free health care. The entire industry is "Give us your money and we might cover you if you're not seriously ill. If you are, then die.".

Under Thompson, they also started using AI to process claims, found that it had a 90% error rate, but decided to keep using it anyway because of how much money it was saving.

Health insurance is also the reason it's so expensive to get care without insurance. Because insurance companies have the buying power to negotiate lower prices for services, doctors and hospitals have to inflate their prices to offset that, to say nothing of the administrative costs associated with that negotiation. This is a large part of why the US pays more than twice as many tax dollars per capita for health care than any other country in the world, despite not actually having a government health care system.

The whole thing is a racket that means everybody has to pay more and most people see worse service than they'd see anywhere else.

He murdered someone who's made a very substantial fortune off of abandoning people to die who were paying him to do exactly the opposite of that. I doubt it was cold blood. There was almost certainly a direct motivation there.

Resorting to murder is extreme, certainly, but the belief that Thompson was a bad person was pretty tame.

Damn_Underscore posted...
and wrote a mysterious message on the bullets

There's no particular mystery there. Delays and denials of care are common in health insurance, and United was one of the worst in that regard. He was presumably going for the irony of killing Thompson with the same concepts he used to kill countless others.

While I agree health insurance is a massive scam I don't think free Healthcare is the right way to go. Just don't allow pharmaceutical companies to price gouge, look at prices in other places vs here and you'll realize how cheap it could be.

No more CEO bodies will drop. This was their wakeup call. They're all going to jack up their security (on the company's dollar of course, and by extension, yours) and privatize every move/travel/hotel they make.

The shooter's message was loud and clear. Unfortunately for him and the rest of us plebs, nothing's going to change (except for the aforementioned cost increases to pay for the new standard of security for the c-suite)

Americans just let a criminal, rapist, fascist, dementia-riddeled nut case, who promised to ruin the economy, back into the White House. We are pretty fucking far away right now from people realizing they should demand Healthcare change.

Americans have been lulled into a weird type of passive submissiveness where shoveling shit is something to expect, as opposed get angry about. And when we do riot, it's for the wrong reasons (Jan 6).

This is what a dying empire looks like.

Him not posting some sort of manifesto or warning that more will fall unless changes happen is definitely a lost moment, since the public is going to need to be handheld to be finally angry at the billionaire status quo.

Then again, it was likely more personal then this dude wanting to kick off a revolution.

They'll go down eventually, maybe not in our lifetime but when is the last time a system didn't fall eventually? Even most current systems came at the expense of predecessors. Nations rise and fall and that's how it'll always be.

It should be worth noting, Anthem announced yesterday (same day this dude was killed) that they weren't going to pay for full anesthesia anymore - a very poor day to announce that.

As of 30 minutes ago, they just announced they are backing off that idea. Not even 24 hours later.

Now, the backlash of that announcement was large enough to likely to reverse their plan alone, but I can't help but think the CEO of United being whacked for being a greedy ass had something to do with it. Turns out, making billionaires afraid DOES work, and they know it. Precisely why they hope the public will roll over and be too busy arguing over trans people in bathrooms or whatever to notice them fucking us over blind.
