I basically had a massive bleed which took my Hb level to 45, apparently near fatal from the doctors very firmly, but nicely reiterating to me (normal hb levels in women should be 120+), I was collapsing in A&E but that part is traumatic for me so I try not to think of that bit too much and instead I'm concentrating on the good of the NHS workers, donors and all who work tirelessly to bring those like me back from the brink :)

my Hb is 87 now which is still low but I have medications to help and I feel so much better!

Hb levels refer to hemoglobin, so essentially red blood cells.

From what I understand, low levels mean fewer RBCs in circulation, which means oxygen isn't getting through the bloodstream.

45 is, like, really bad.

thank you! oh it was in the mental health topic, I was slooowly browsing CE because internet was super spotty in there and CE was like the only site that would load kind of fast lol

and yeah Hb is haemoglobin, mine was critically low

Being in the UK, the people who donated blood wouldn't have been paid any more than a cup of tea and a biscuit, so yeah, they do good work.

thank you! I had a scan and they said the bleed was caused by a large fibroid so I have to go back in about a month and have a camera root around in my womb then whatver treatment they decide is best to treat it

I did, it started with my periods getting really heavy and passing many clots, then sometimes I'd have two a month, they got super painful and hurt in my bowels as well, I thought it was endometriosis, other women I spoke to told me it was "normal" for periods to get really heavy before menopause so I kind of thought it was likely that as well

exactly, we don't have it easy! And I couldn't get a GP appointment, they were all out so on the day I had the massive bleed I used a service here called NHS 111 because I became suddenly short of breath, rapid heartbeat and was dry heaving, they referred me to A&E, it would have been a two hour wait for an ambulance but I was lucky enough to have someone able to drive me there so told them not to send an ambulance, which was lucky because my body wasn't going to survive for that length of a wait
