Cause before tax, my monthly salary is about $20,000, which would mean a ring in the $60,000 range...but that is a bit too pricey for me.

How many people still go by the three months rule anyway?

I'm not sure if it's before or after tax, but it's definitely after falling for the scam. A three or low-four digit ring with a real diamond can be beautiful. I paid $792.72, including tax, for Mrs. Devsman's. Of course, that was thirteen years ago.

It's 2 months, not 3. And it's a pretty silly "rule" anyway. If you're in the market for an engagement ring, you should set a reasonable budget, not some arbitrary number like that.

Respectfully, stop buying into that bullshit. That entire gimmick was created by De Beers the diamond company. Unless your a diamond expert I seriously doubt most people can tell the difference between a 5 carat diamond and an 8 carat diamond. Plus if your spouse is giving a shit about that kind of thing, then she's not the one for you.

Buy a respectful ring, a few thousand dollars, and then spend another 4-5k on a nice vacation for the two of you. That's better than any 50,000 dollar ring. To quote Ron Swanson from Parks and Rec, people who buy things are suckers. Adding to that, especially when it comes to diamonds.

My little sister for example, chose to get a ring off of Amazon. Cost her husband all of 500 bucks. It's a nice fake black gem that even if it gets stolen, costs next to nothing to replace.

If you're serious about buying a diamond ring, look for a diamond broker. Find a stone you like and then have a setting made for it. Don't buy a ring "off the shelf" - you will overpay.

Again, its a bullshit rule that De Beers created to sell more stock. To be honest, Diamonds are practically worthless outside of looking pretty. They just sell them for a ridiculous upcharge.

Not true. They are quite useful in industrial applications, as the tips of cutting tools, for example.

Its true that you should pay a considerable amount for a ring but 3 months is too few. Its 6 months minimum, and thats if youre on at least a 6 figure salary. Consider 10+ months if you are on fewer than 6 figures

All that matters is that your in a happy relationship. Spending money on a ring just doesn't make sense. Especially when you can use most of that money towards a home or retirement.

My wife would have kicked my ass if I spent that much on a ring.

If you ask me the key isn't what the ring is worth but the thought that went into it. What my wife treasures about the ring is the story.

Her best friend was engaged but they didn't have a ring yet, I told her that I was planning to ask my future wife to marry me but I wanted to figure out what sort of ring she wanted. I got her friend to take her ring shopping and I "reluctantly" went along and brought a friend of mine so I'd "not get bored". Anyways, I didn't hover but stayed close enough to hear her talk about the rings, was able to get a good idea of what she liked.

A few days later I went to a jewelry store and picked out a ring that checked all the boxes for what she liked. The style she liked actually restricted the size of gem pretty significantly so I bought a high quality diamond but even doing that the ring didn't cost very much but it was something I knew she'd love and she did.

Basically, try to buy a ring that suits her more than anything else, that matters so much more than the price. Heck if I was to buy my wife an engagement ring all over again today? I'd not even go with a diamond but rather her birth stone, she'd like that even more even though it would have cost even less but that's a bit of info she hadn't mentioned while out ring shopping with her friend.

There's nothing wrong with symbolism or tradition, but there shouldn't be anything mandatory about it either. I say, you should absolutely be able to propose and marry without a ring at all.

it's literally marketing created by DeBeer's (diamond cartel) and it actually stuck. we bought it hook, line and sinker while they laughed all the way to the bank.

in all reality, there is no reason to buy a 'real diamond' outside of social pressure. buy a lab grown diamond that is of better quality and 1/10th of the price of an 'earth diamond'.

I spent $12k on my wife's engagement ring.

I always knew I'd go up to five figures for her ring so in an effort to make sure she got exactly what she wanted, we both went ring shopping for it. I have a good eye for diamonds so I bought that separately and we got a custom setting for it.
