Maybe "useless" is a poor word...how about "unreliable"? Or "unregulated" perhaps?

It seems like the one place where we could go to get a majority of the information is being tainted by AI.

Thoughts?

We're already there. Search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo are pretty much garbage now. Give it another 2-3 years and it'll probably be impossible to find anything online that isn't directly connected to a major social media site.

The Internet in general is so much worse than it was 20 years ago. SEO, designing for mobile apps, and corporate greed have utterly ruined pretty much everything.

I don't agree with the Google Sucks Now meme, I've had trouble getting the results I'm looking for maybe once that I can remember

The new Google AI isn't always correct so you can't simply trust it but it's an interesting addition, I expect it to improve a lot in future years. AI is a lot like video games when they first hit the scene

Then you're not looking for anything obscure.

It's objectively worse now than it was 5 years ago, and it was objectively worse then than it was 10 years ago. If you're only looking for simple searches and just accept the first couple of options it offers you you'll never notice the difference, but if you're actually looking for more specific things, harder to find information, or even smaller sites outside of the ecosystem (that search engines used to be able to find easily), you'll notice very quickly that it's a LOT harder to find things now than it used to be.

The major search engines have also changed how they interpret syntax, which contributes to why it's harder to find specific things now. And again, if you weren't using that functionality in the first place, you won't really notice how broken it is now.

Things started going bad when companies discovered SEO and when things started getting optimized for digital assistants like Siri and Alexa. It seems to get worse every couple years as whatever new thing they decide to throw in breaks things even more. AI's just the latest flaw in the system.

I've had a few experiences recently trying to google images for my students and words like "explosion" and "bonsai" were just utterly overcome with AI trash. If I were just making vocabulary flashcards for beginners it wouldn't be a huge issue but AI images are useless for showing actual real stuff.

The hilarious thing is, there's so much AI art out there now, that AI art generators are using OTHER AI art to pull data from, meaning the inherent flaws in AI Art (especially early examples) are now tainting the entire pool, further corrupting new AI art. It's hilariously awful recursion.

Any who, the internet is already there, due to it turning into an advertising hellscape. And the constant battle of AD blockers and the browsers' constant reluctance to support them is getting tiresome. Seeing what all websites look like now without an adblocker on is fucking awful.

It would just slow down the spread of information, which might not be that good. It would also slow down the learning process. Being able to access books and other things on the internet is actually useful, and doesnt make us less human. Slowing down the spread of information can be bad due to someone else being able to control the information before the public gets ahold of it First hand experiences are good and all, but not everyone will have the means to do it The internet itself is fine. AI sucks, though

I have only heard of 1 major case so far where AI was used to take down a part of the internet that wasn't owned by the AI's owner.

Funko Pop using an AI to take down Itch.io.

https://www.techradar.com/computing/artificial-intelligence/funko-pops-ai-powered-brand-protection-

service-temporarily-takes-down-indie-gaming-site-proving-that-automation-without-humans-is-a-mistake

(Link cut in 1/2 because of gamefaqs rules)

That's not to say it isn't a problem because it only happened once (as far as I'm aware).

Big companies are regularly using AI to flood sites with fake positive reviews for their products now, that's a problem (there already existed companies that did this before but now it's cheaper and more efficient).

Also, the AI lies intentionally on it's own and not due to errors, poor training, etc. This is more concerning as AI has lied to save itself from being shut down by developers.
