Another year finished means its time for my personal annual tradition of ranking every movie I watched for the first time in the past year. It was a pretty busy year for me, so I unfortunately only saw 87 new-for-me films as opposed to my usual 120+. Surprisingly, I think this actually made it harder to rank. I really didnt watch very many outright bad movies this year. If I had time to watch something, it was usually a movie I was really excited to check out or had been wanting to watch for a while. So this year more than ever, just because a movie is lower on the list doesnt mean I didnt enjoy it. This list is extremely subjective and is solely based on my gut-level reaction to how much I enjoyed each movie and/or how much of an impact it had on me. So here it is, my ranking of every new-for-me film I watched in 2024, from least favorite to favorite:

Yep, came out last year, it's more based off the musical though. Wasn't amazing, but I did have a fun time with it/enjoyed it more than I thought I would honestly.

Realized Ive been doing this for 5 years now; Debating doing a massive list of all 5 years to rank them altogether and maybe reevaluate some past rankings, but god damn would that take a while >_>

I was interested to see Monkey Man, but saw some negative reviews. What are your thoughts on it?

I absolutely loved it, cant even fathom what people would dislike about it. Its an almost perfect action movie, and as someone who doesnt usually love revenge movies, this one handled it really fucking well. Highly recommend, Dev Patel is incredible in it.

I really liked it, but I think I definitely prefer King Fu Hustle over it.

Out of the Akira Kurosawa movies I've seen, Seven Samurai was my least favorite. I much preferred Yojimbo and High & Low.

I loved Yojimbo, but IMO Seven Samurai is basically a perfect movie. For a movie to be 70 years old, 3 and half hours long, and still be so captivating with its story, characters, set design, etc.? Thats so impressive to me.

Yeah, Seven Samurai is fantastic.

I need to watch more Kurosawa; I think Ive only seen Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Rashoman, and Throne of Blood.
