In a post on Chinese social media website Weibo, Game Science co-founder and CEO Feng Ji celebrated PC and PlayStation 5 action game Black Myth: Wukongs Game of the Year win at the 2024 Steam awards, and in doing so lamented the lack of an Xbox version of the game, which he blamed on optimization trouble with the Xbox Series S.

The only thing missing is the Xbox, he said, per machine learning translation, which somehow feels a bit wrong, but that 10GB of shared memory without years of optimisation experience is really hard to make work.

Larian received help from MS to make BG3 work. The S was a mistake. Sure it has sold slightly more than the X, but thats cause its much cheaper.

There was two timelines for the S.

It outsells the X and PS5 meaning devs develop their games targeting the S and the X and PS5 get held back.

Xbox suffers because Devs have to release games on an underpowered device to release on the X.

I know theres a fantasy land that Microsoft lives in where every S owner eventually buys an X because they see the games can run better but that was never going to happen

Microsoft had to know they would be second place to Sony again this generation because they had the play catch-up from last time, so the idea that they thought the S would outsell the PS5 feels implausible.

Ms really fucked up with the S should have just been an X with no blu ray drive like Sony did

Yes the series S underpowered, but if you were better at optimizing you could release on it.

Wukong is a graphically impressive game that runs well on PS5. Even the seasoned developers at Larian had problems making BG3 work. Its literally asking developers to be wizards in order to make it work.

It's always lazy devs...

They aren't the only ones that struggle with it, it's reportedly a constant issue amongst developers

The S doesn't have the splitscreen which was what was holding the X version back. Even MS couldn't get their piece of shit system to not be a piece of shit

How does saying "it's too hard to optimize because we don't have years of experience" sound like they are full of themselves?

Also, it also bothered me when so many people would call developers lazy. I see it all the time, not just in this topic. I meant to make this post in a different topic I saw yesterday or the day before. It's not like developers are just sitting around going "oh I could make this better, but I don't feel like it." That's not what is happening. They are usually working on extremely tight deadlines and are (or were) having to crunch crazy hours to meet deadlines in a usually very toxic environment. Like imagine being severely overworked and underpaid and then get called lazy for it.

I never owned an Xbox before Series S.
I'm happy with it to play older Xbox games.
My PS5 is my main console, and I never would have forked over the cash for a Series X

so that is why it got snubbed for Game of the Year

^ looking at past GotY winners, most of them have been multiplat, three of them have been PlayStation (GoW 2018, TLoU2, & Astro Bot), and one of them has been Nintendo (BotW).

so I dunno if they care if a game is available on Xbox, tbh.

Xbox will never be better than Playstation.

The Series S is just a slightly upgraded Xbox One X.

I thought I read something back when it first came out that a confirmed leak said that Sony had a hidden exclusivity deal with them. Not long after that I remember them saying that it was the Series S fault and there was back and forth about which it was. I think there was evidence it was Sony back then but it was so long ago that I dont remember. It could just be the Series S after all but I do find it weird that it is taking them this long to optimize for it. I dont think they are really trying to at this point or its way on the back burner

Why are consoles still using shared memory? Imagine how much better the games would be with dedicated video memory. You could do actual true 4k 60fps gaming!
