I get the feeling this will essentially come down to the baristas' discretion.

Anecdotally speaking, nearly every Starbucks barista I've interacted with were nice and easy-going.

Worked at Starbucks for 5 years and was a manager for 3. You sort of become numb to the people in the lobby, but the vast majority of people bought something. We did stop giving out cups of water without a purchase, because for some reason in the summer people just show up for water and nothing else.

Of course this is for the high volume urban stores I'd imagine. Pretty much everywhere downtown/uptown in my state already require a purchase for using the bathroom, so meh. I doubt you'd be kicked out in suburbia for asking to use the bathroom.

I have no idea why because it wasnt something I was specifically raised on but I always felt like if I used a bathroom somewhere I should make a purchase. Like if I used a gas station/convenience store facility I should buy something.

Ive always been this way and not sure where it comes from.

I've always thought this was proper etiquette anyway. Just get a normal drip coffee or whatever. Whatever's cheap.

It'll be interesting to see how consistently this gets enforced. I'd imagine most of the employees don't care. Unless corporate got really nasty with it.

I think that Unless it's a public bathroom, the store is maintaining it and thus providing you with a service and you feel the need to compensate for it

I'm sure this will be an as-basis. I've been in Starbucks that are empty. I've been in some that are constantly packed. I'm sure the former will be looser with it than the latter. This change however gives the latter more teeth.

Yes I dont mean like a generalized public restroom. Like you said anyone that is a specific store that maintains it feels different.

As long as they accept purchase after using the bathroom (because let's face it, sometimes, you have to get into the bathroom immediately, especially if you're the parent of a small child who might not have felt like they needed to go before they left home), I'm more-or-less okay with this.

Some stores do. This policy won't completely eliminate the problem because there are paying customers who do weird shit in bathrooms, too. It should significantly reduce what employees have to deal with, at least.

This. If you're running a public-facing business and you don't let people use your loo, you're a dick. If Starbucks don't like it, they can use some of their money to lobby the government to provide more public loos (maybe even start actually paying some damn tax so it can afford to).

If it's an open use and available bathroom in a seedy part of town, then there is almost certainly a lot of people doing some kind drug in the bathroom. Probably less common for people to OD IN the bathroom.

When I was younger and more naive I'd stop at some ghetto gas station on the way home more times than I should have because it was directly on my drive home. I'd always wonder why it smelled like someone dumped a gallon of cat pee everywhere over by the bathroom.

Turns out people were quite literally smoking crack in there daily after getting off the bus. I guess now I know what that smell is, but now I rarely let my tank drop below half, and wait til I'm in my neck of the woods to stop anywhere.

I actually don't mind this too much as long as there's not a minimum purchase amount. It is one of those things where public restrooms in private businesses is an issue, and if the people are gonna be detrimental inside there, it's better to at least make some money before everything goes wrong.

Then again, I'm pretty sure even like the cheapest pastry at Starbucks will be 5 bucks so...not really budget.

I worked at a store that near government buildings that afforded homeless people lots of protections. My store basically became "the homeless spot," which was generally fine. The bathrooms had a code on them, but you just had to ask and we'd give it without purchase.
But every so often we'd get someone doing drugs in the bathroom and have to ban them. If they had friends, the friends would get the bathroom code and give it to the junkie who would do it again. That would continue until we had a police officer issue a trespass notice, which usually solved the issue.

Stupid policy. This is how to lose customers.

Why?
People on trips stop at places to pee. Being anal about "what buy something" makes them not want to when they probably would have. Instead they will go somewhere else.

Also guy waiting on another guy will buy but not until person they waiting on comes.

Having worked there I can confirm that it's mostly the kind of people you'd expect to sit at a coffee shop all day. (Artsy hipsteresque people and wannabe artists alike) The funniest moments were discovering people who I thought were coming in daily to work were really just gaming the entire time . Not many, but a few. Had a couple people (over the span of years) who literally came to watch porn.

Who stops to pee at a Starbucks on a road trip? Any place with a Starbucks most certainly has a gas station or McDonald's or whatever nearby
