Not sure if serious, but if the Democrats had shown up it would have given the Republicans quorum, which means everything they just did would have been 100% legal.

Point. Sec of State called for dismissal due to lack of a quorum. GOP ignored this and when Secretary of State left decided that they could count the vacancy as a present GOP member of the house.

I read the not very clear article, and it says republicans have a 67-66 majority because there's one seat open waiting for a special election.

as far as I know open seats waiting for a special election don't just make the government, state or federal, stop running, so the republicans probably actually have the right in this since there's no guarantee that special election will be won by a Democrat, even if that's the likely outcome.

obviously I'm not a lawyer versed in Minnesota state law so this will be up to their supreme court, but all the Dems just folding and not showing up at all makes things look much worse than they should have

The issue is that the open seat is in a safely blue district, which will almost certainly tie the chamber at 67-67. Under ties, it's common to have power-sharing arrangements between the two parties to conduct business, which is exactly what happened in the Minnesota senate. The Democrats are pointing out, with good reason, that the Republicans do not have a mandate to behave as though they have a majority (setting chairs for committees, etc.) when, realistically, the seats will be tied in a month's time.

Does the Republican party have the right to do what they did? No, because there was no quorum, meaning no business could be done. Minimum quorum in the Minnesota House is 68 members; since only the 67 Republicans showed up, there were not enough legislators present for the House to run (which is exactly *why* the Democrats refused to show up without a power-sharing agreement in place).
