I can't help but wonder how much different the world would be rn if Bernie wasn't shafted in 2016.

I may be being a bit delusional that he even really had a shot, but at the time it did seem like he was the more popular candidate.

It's not a defense of these people, they fucked us as far as I'm concerned, but it did seem like both a number of Maga and a ton of voter apathy was born more out of resentment for Hillary and how that primary went.

The writing on the wall was there all along.

Here's a Reuters article from January 2024, stating half of Dem voters didn't want Biden to run for a second term:

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/americans-dismayed-by-biden-trump-2024-rematch-reutersipsos-poll-finds-2024-01-25/

There was a CE topic on this and people were deep in denial. Aggressively so.

I don't doubt that you're probably correct, but I still can't help but be a bit skeptical of that.

I know a surprising amount of centerists, rightists, libertarians, and independents ... the kind of people who wouldn't participate in a Democrat primary who at least acted like they would have voted Bernie over Trump in a heartbeat but saw Hillary as not an option.

So even if Bernie wasn't more popular with democrats specifically, it sure as hell seemed like Bernie was more popular with Americans as a whole.

If they couldn't be assed to vote in the primary then a good chunk of them wouldn't be assed to vote on the general.

People need to stop sitting out primaries and then crying about our choices in the general

Nah way more people vote in the general than in a primary. The people being discussed would not be the type to register as democrats and jump through all the extra hoops months in advance to be eligible.

So its primarily wealthy out of touch party loyalists that keep giving the gen pop 2 crap options to vote on.

This is an education problem, and a democrat's lack of awareness problem. Joe was not going to win and the fact they did jack shit by upheld status quo is what got us here. For fuck sakes, Merrick Garland just sat there to hold the throne for the next Trump administration. That's all he did. Now they'll pull it even further right. Then democrats, if they ever get in again, will sit their asses down, hold the paperweight, and await the next far right administration. It's an endless cycle.

When we choose the status quo and let power brokers essentially pick the candidates, when we suppress even the possibility of change or a new generation of leadership, when we ignore glowing red hot flaws in our candidates, it always has consequences. Always.

They might not show themselves immediately. But you bet your ass they're coming. Picking Biden in 2020 was always setting us up for a bad time, picking Harris as the VP compounded that error, and Biden being arrogant enough to run again at all despite his age and popularity was the bullet in the head.

From even before Biden won in 2020, there should have been a desperate search for a popular successor that could unite all the elements of the party and that person needed to be selected by the voters without a thumb on the scale by the DNC or the current admin.

The failure to do that will be disastrous. And the only reason we didn't is because an old man thought he was entitled to power and general thoughts that "you don't do that to an incumbent president" as if that's a law of physics.

The midterms gave Democrats a false sense of security. They were so sure that the country was "done with Trump." Some really wanted to believe this was the moment they've dreamt of where Republicans suddenly rise up and wise up against insanity while others insisted Trump wouldn't/couldn't even be the nominee.

Concerns that conservatives were going to double down were dismissed, as the Dems doubled down on Roe v. Wade and Jan 6th being enough reason to sway sensible Republicans to vote blue while scaring everybody else into doing the same.

Had Democrats been a little more scared a little earlier then maybe those higher up would have changed tactics. As is, the person who refused to step down until the last second is warning us to be wary of the threat of oligarchy within governments.

According to some here and elsewhere I'm sure, any criticism of Democrats period is an endorsement of Trump or at least helps Republicans. They get more mad at people calling out Democrats for doing bad things than the Democrats actually doing the bad things.

I've always said while Republicans have the cult, Democrats have their fanboys/gals and they're as rabid as almost any other fandom.
