Considering the issue they had with people accidentally throwing their wii remotes at their TVs when the Wii first came out, yes.

Ive been playing smash with my day 1 joycons to this day and their only problem is stick drift. what do you mean people are wrecking controllers?

am i missing something here or are people smashing their controllers into walls or something

The joy sticks themselves are very poorly/cheaply made. Plenty of them crumble after the lightest use. The drift occurs in nearly all of them after a very short amount of play time. Im on my fourth set since purchasing the console. All stick drift.

Magnetic attachments arent permanent. They can break away a lot easier.

That has nothing to do with a magnetic attachment for the Joycons.

Also I'd argue that 4 sets of joycons is absolutely a you problem - they undeniably have stick drift issues but 4 sets indicates heavy use. I'm still on my first with minimal drift.

I've purchased a total of three sets of Joycons (one came with my launch model Switch, one was bought for multiplayer, one came with my OLED) and literally none of them have had stick drift issues so far

I am writing it here because I dont have another place to air my grievance: I am sick of my sons kicking my butt in Super Smash Bros. I am terrible at both platformers and fighting games, and they destroy me every time.

It is elder abuse at this point!

Yes, stick drift is a problem with joycons, and that's on Nintendo.

Any damage caused by people throwing their joycons, however they are attached? That's on them.

That's one thing that kind of worries me a bit. The right joycon on my switch will come loose with just a little pressure.

I guess magnets wouldn't wear out like that and become loose, but it feels like that would come at the expense of having a weaker connection overall. Idk, maybe it locks into place alongside the magnetic part.

Not only does that get fixed by restarting the console, it would also make no sense for them to use a worse method to change how joycons get attached than what's already in place.

If they're chaning it, it should be because they're aware of prior issues and are addressing them

it could be a problem in portable mode when aggressively and violently thrashing the switch maybe? I dont play video games like that

Also Nintendo has 100% stress tested the hell out of the magnetic attachment, they don't want a repeat of the Switch stick drift issues.

But those conversations get me too. Recently I was showing the kids an old picture of me and my wife/their Mom in front of a phone booth, and neither of them knew what the hell they were looking at (it was one of the red ones in London). After that conversation, I had to go lie down for a while.

The Wii controls actually demanded you move the controller that way though. Like playing Wii Sports tennis required you to do the exact same motion you'd do if you were trying to throw it at the TV.

I know you can do that with the Joycon on its own because some games still do motion controls, but the issue in question involves it being docked onto the Switch.

People in Smash and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe have already put the joycons to the test for roughness. The things are weak compared to the PS or Xbox analog sticks.

WTF? Are you like, shaking the console around while you play or something?

There's video that clearly shows that you have to hold down release buttons near the triggers in order to separate the controllers from the console. It's not JUST magnets keeping them together.

I watched a video from GameXplain about this the other day, and they said it's an unnecessary concern because it's not sticking out any further than necessary and also pointed out that NES and SNES games also had the same layout. Basically, the only way you're going to break it is if you're intentionally trying to or incredibly reckless in handling it.

It took this long for someone to mention the locking mechanism.

I've used devices with magnetic attachments and yeah, the ones without a locking mechanism will inevitably come apart causing a tragedy. I dunno what else the new button near the shoulder buttons is supposed to do other than be either extremely awkward to press due to its positioning or... usage as a locking mechanism.

I still want to know how TC plays games that "Everything will go flying across the room" is a concern.

We already have third party magnetic joycons and they are amazing.
